You can make simple rotary-tool attachments for light sanding or polishing, but homemade designs should be treated as hobby experiments—not as tested or speed-rated accessories. A project video demonstrates a flap sander, sanding disc, mixer, small-lathe concept and hook-and-loop pad sander; it does not establish safe loads or operating speeds for them. For demanding cutting, grinding or material removal, use an accessory designed and rated for the job.
What can you make for a rotary tool?
One DIY project video shows five concepts: a flap sander, a sanding disc, a mixer or stirrer, a small-lathe concept and a hook-and-loop pad sander. Its listed materials include emery cloth, a standard mandrel, a metal cutting disc and hook-and-loop material. These are examples of hobby builds, not independently validated designs or safety-certified attachments. The video does not provide verified load ratings or safe RPM limits for them. For construction or shop work, keep an improvised attachment to modest, low-load tasks such as light sanding or polishing. Do not assume a homemade bit is suitable for cutting, grinding or heavy stock removal simply because it fits the tool.
How do the collet and mandrel fit together?
A collet grips the accessory’s shank. A mandrel is a shaft used to mount accessories that do not have a built-in shank; mandrels can use different mounting methods, including standard, screw and EZ Lock styles. The attachment must suit the tool, mandrel and accessory. Dremel’s tool guidance explains the distinction and mounting basics.

For the Dremel collets covered in its guide, the supported shank sizes are 0.8, 1.6, 2.4 and 3.2 mm. Those figures are not universal across rotary tools, and product ranges can change. Check the manual for your exact tool and the accessory packaging before assembly. Dremel’s accessory guide provides model and accessory information.
Before powering on, confirm the assembly is centered, snug and undamaged. The collet and mandrel system is meant to hold the accessory securely; a visibly off-center or loose attachment can wobble, slip or vibrate. Stop using it if you notice any of those signs.

How should you use a homemade attachment?
- Choose a light-duty task. Limit experimental builds to modest work such as light sanding or polishing. Use a purpose-built, rated accessory for cutting, grinding or substantial material removal.
- Check compatibility. Match the attachment method and shank to the tool’s collet or the correct mandrel. Follow the tool manual and accessory instructions.
- Inspect the fit. Secure the accessory and check that it is centered, tight and free of visible damage before starting.
- Begin at low speed. Dremel recommends low RPM for polishing and for soft materials such as plastic or soft wood; it describes higher RPM for cutting or carving hard materials. These general recommendations do not establish an approved speed for any homemade assembly. Do not transfer a commercial accessory’s maximum RPM to a DIY attachment.
- Protect yourself and the work area. Wear eye protection and a dust mask; use hearing protection when needed. These precautions reduce exposure but do not make an improvised attachment safe at any speed.
- Stop if anything changes. If the bit loosens, runs off-center, vibrates or becomes damaged, switch off and unplug or otherwise disconnect the tool before inspecting it.
When should you use a manufactured accessory instead?
Choose by operation, material, tool compatibility and the manufacturer’s speed rating. A cutting wheel and a cutting bit are different accessories: wheels are thin abrasive or fiberglass-based discs for cutting, while cutting bits are straight bits intended for free-form cutting. They are not interchangeable. Dremel’s accessory catalog lists purpose-built options including sanding drums and bands, polishing media, grinding stones, cut-off wheels and mandrels.

If you want repeatable results or need to work at higher loads, a compatible rotary-tool mandrel and sanding accessory kit or a purpose-built accessory assortment is the more appropriate route. Verify the exact tool model, shank size and accessory mounting requirements rather than assuming every kit fits.
