You can make a simple fishing pole from a sturdy, flexible branch or bamboo, fishing line, and a hook. This is a fixed-line cane-pole setup: it has no reel, so you place the bait within reach with a controlled swing rather than casting like a conventional rod and reel.
What you need
- A sturdy, slightly bendy branch or a piece of bamboo
- Fishing line, a hook, and bait
- A small bobber and split-shot weight, if useful for the water and bait depth
- Pruning shears or a saw if you are cutting a branch
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) gives one example of a green sapling about ¾ inch in diameter at the base and 4 to 5 feet long; it also suggests bamboo as an option. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) describes a sturdy green branch 5 to 8 feet long. These are examples, not required dimensions. A longer pole can reach farther from shore, but is more cumbersome to handle.
If using a live sapling, get permission before cutting it. The Minnesota DNR advises having an adult help with pruning shears or a saw. Bamboo is an alternative if you do not want to cut a branch or cannot find a suitable one.
Choose the pole and line setup
Pick a manageable pole
Look for a branch that is sturdy enough to hold line and tackle, but has some flex. Avoid brittle or damaged wood. For a first try, choose a length you can control comfortably from the bank.

Decide how much line to use
The Minnesota DNR’s DIY example uses line about 2 feet longer than the pole. Its general cane-pole guidance says line is typically about the same length as the pole. Either is a practical starting point: extra line can extend reach, while a shorter length is easier to manage.
Attach the line
Direct tip tie
For the simplest setup, tie the line near the narrow tip. Wrap it around the pole a couple of times, then secure it with half-hitch knots. Check that the knot holds with a gentle pull before adding tackle.

- ULTRA COMPACT FOR HIKING & STREAM FISHING // Collapses to just 15 in. and weighs from 1.7 oz — small enough for hiking backpacks, daypacks or jacket pockets. Made for narrow creeks, urban ponds and mountain streams where long rods are too cumbersome.
- ADVANCED 24T CARBON SPECIFICATIONS // Pure 24T high-modulus carbon blank (≈1.3× the toughness of 30T carbon) for rigidity and shock absorption; extra-fast 1:9 action; 0.035 in. sensitive tip; rated for fish up to 2.2 lb; 7–13 precision-fitted sections; 1.7–4.7 oz across 6–12 ft lengths.
- NO MORE SPLINTERING OR STRIPPED CAPS // Standard telescopic poles often arrive with rough edges, carbon splinters and plastic caps that crack or strip. This rod's precision-tapered joints are hand-polished smooth, and the lock-tight aluminum alloy cap keeps every section secure in transit and during the fight.
- BEGINNER-FRIENDLY & GIFT-READY // No reel, no complex casting — a great first rod for kids and new anglers, and a thoughtful gift for birthdays, Father's Day and holidays. Engineered for trout, crappie and bluegill in shallow, small freshwater.

Handle-to-tip wrap
MDC describes another arrangement: tie the line near the handle, wrap it along the pole toward the tip, and tie it again near the tip. Its example leaves roughly 10 feet of line past the tip. The extra line can remain accessible if the branch tip breaks, but keep it controlled so it does not tangle.
Add the hook, weight, and bobber
- Tie a hook to the free end of the line.
- Add a small split-shot weight above the hook if the bait needs help sinking.
- Attach a bobber above the weight if you want to suspend the bait and see a bite.
A bobber should sit slightly submerged when the setup is balanced, according to the Minnesota DNR. If it sinks, there may be too much split shot; if it rides high or lies on its side, there may be too little. Use lead-free sinkers where available: the DNR warns that lead can poison people and wildlife.

Place the bait and fish
A fixed-line pole does not cast like a reel-equipped rod. Start from a clear bank with a short, controlled placement. The Minnesota DNR recommends sweeping the pole underhand toward the target; Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission guidance describes holding the pole at about a 45-degree angle and swinging the line over the water. Keep other people clear of the hook’s path as you move the line.
Once the bait is in the water, watch the bobber if you are using one. With no reel, keep the line within reach and lift the pole to bring the hook and catch back toward you.
