Build a simple automatic street-light model with a light-dependent resistor (LDR), an NPN transistor, a resistor and LEDs. In the discrete circuit described in Lesson #13, the lamps stay off in bright conditions and turn on when darkness raises the LDR’s resistance. A microcontroller is optional; it is not needed for this basic version.
How the automatic street light works
An LDR, also called a photoresistor, senses the light falling on it. Its resistance decreases in brighter light and rises as the surroundings get darker. In the discrete circuit, that change controls the base current of a BC547 NPN transistor. The transistor acts as a switch: the LEDs are off in light and turn on when it is dark. A common photoresistor module uses a voltage divider to turn the resistance change into a changing voltage instead.
The precise wiring and component values depend on the schematic you follow. For the circuit described in MakerGhat’s Lesson #13, use its circuit diagram rather than mixing connections from another design. Atal Innovation Mission’s indexed circuit description also explains LDR-and-transistor daylight and darkness switching.
Parts for a discrete Lesson #13 model
The title-matched project describes three white LEDs, a BC547 transistor, a 100 kΩ resistor, a photoresistor and a 9V battery connector. For assembling and presenting the model, it also lists a breadboard, jumper wires, cardboard, paper and glue. MakerGhat’s basic parts list likewise includes an LDR, NPN transistor, resistor, LED, breadboard, jumper wires, and a 9V battery with snap connector.

These are examples from particular project instructions, not a universal parts prescription. Follow one schematic consistently, check its component values, and confirm the pinout of your actual transistor; do not assume every transistor has the same terminal arrangement.
Assemble and test the circuit
- Check the schematic and components. Identify the BC547’s terminals using the pinout applicable to your part, and note the LED polarity and the battery connector’s positive and negative leads.
- Connect the power. Place the battery connector leads on the breadboard as shown in the circuit diagram. Keep the supply disconnected while arranging components if that makes it easier to avoid accidental shorts.
- Wire the sensor and switch. Place the LDR, resistor and transistor in the breadboard and connect them according to the same schematic. The LDR and transistor connections determine how the light level controls the switch.
- Add the LEDs. Connect the LED or LEDs with the polarity and current-limiting arrangement shown in your schematic. Do not infer connections from a different project just because it also uses a BC547.
- Test the response. Connect the supply. In a bright area, the LEDs should be off; cover the LDR to simulate darkness and they should turn on. Uncover it or shine a flashlight on it to compare the response.
- Build the display. Once the circuit works, mount the lamps and route the wires on a cardboard base. Keep the LDR exposed to the room light so it senses the surroundings rather than being permanently shaded by the display.
Choose between a transistor circuit and a programmed sensor
The transistor version is a direct, code-free circuit. A second approach uses a photoresistor module with a microcontroller: the program reads changing sensor values and compares them with a configurable threshold to switch an LED on in low light and off in brighter conditions. Keyestudio documents this module-and-code approach in its photoresistor lesson. Use the module’s own wiring and voltage requirements; its assumptions do not automatically apply to the discrete BC547 circuit.

| Approach | How switching is controlled | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Discrete LDR and transistor | The LDR’s resistance change affects transistor base current; the circuit switches the lamp LEDs without code. | An LDR, NPN transistor, resistor, LEDs, suitable power source, and wiring that matches one schematic. |
| Photoresistor module and microcontroller | Code reads the sensor value and uses a selected threshold to decide when to switch an LED. | A compatible sensor module, microcontroller, LED circuit and program; exact voltage and setup depend on the hardware. |
The sources describe both methods but do not establish a controlled comparison of assembly difficulty or reliability. For a basic model whose goal is to demonstrate automatic switching, the discrete circuit avoids adding a programming step; choose the module approach when you want to read values or adjust the threshold in code.
Troubleshoot a street light that will not switch
- No LEDs turn on: Check that the battery is connected with the correct polarity, the wiring is secure, and the LED orientation and transistor terminals match the schematic.
- LEDs stay on in bright conditions: Check the LDR wiring and whether it is actually receiving light. Confirm that the circuit connections match the selected diagram.
- LEDs do not turn on when the LDR is covered: Recheck the transistor pinout, the LDR and resistor connections, and the supply connection. Test with a flashlight and then cover the sensor again to compare conditions.
- The module version behaves unexpectedly: Verify the module and microcontroller wiring, their voltage compatibility, and the threshold used in the program. Do not apply the discrete circuit’s connection assumptions to a module setup.
Use low-voltage power and handle the build carefully
This is a small educational electronics model, not a mains-powered outdoor street light. Use the low-voltage supply specified by the circuit, avoid shorting battery leads, and disconnect power while correcting wiring. Follow the component orientation and connection diagram, and ask a teacher or adult for help if you are unsure about the battery or connections.
