Yes. WAGO 221 Series connectors accept solid, stranded and fine-stranded copper conductors, but the permitted wire size and strip length depend on the exact model and regional approval. For the U.S. 221 handling instructions cited here, the stated range is 24–10 AWG and the strip length is 11 mm (0.43 in.). Check the connector’s own markings and specifications before wiring.
Can you use WAGO connectors with stranded wire?
WAGO says its 221 Series accepts solid, stranded and fine-stranded conductors. The U.S. handling instructions specify 24–10 AWG, but that range should not be assumed for every 221 variant or every regional version. Confirm the exact connector’s conductor type, size range, number of ports and local ratings against its product data. WAGO offers two-, three- and five-wire versions, but the full specifications vary by model. See WAGO’s 221 Series overview and U.S. 221 handling instructions.
How to put stranded wire in a WAGO 221
- Check the connector. Verify that the exact model accepts the conductor type and gauge, has enough ports, and is approved and rated for the installation location.
- Prepare the conductor. Strip the stranded copper wire cleanly to the length marked on the connector. The cited U.S. 221 instructions specify 11 mm (0.43 in.); use the connector’s strip-length indicator rather than applying that measurement to other models or families.
- Open the lever. Raise the orange lever fully.
- Insert the wire. Push the conductor fully into its port so the stripped section is inside the connector.
- Close the lever. Push it back down. WAGO summarizes the handling method as: “Pull the lever up, insert a conductor and push the lever back down – done!”
- Remove a conductor when needed. Lift the lever again, then withdraw the wire.
Do stranded wires need ferrules for WAGO connectors?
Not as a blanket rule established by WAGO’s guidance. WAGO’s base conductor specifications apply to untreated copper conductors, which may be connected after stripping. A ferrule changes the conductor’s effective dimensions, so the ferrule-equipped wire must still fit the exact connector’s permitted range.
If you choose to use a ferrule, WAGO specifies tubular, tin-plated copper ferrules compliant with DIN 46228-1 or DIN 46228-4. Its guidance also calls for a ferrule length matching the connector’s specified strip length, a crimp surface parallel to the contact surface, and a gas-tight crimp for a durable, secure contact. Ferrules reduce the maximum conductor cross-section the connector can accommodate, so do not assume a ferrule that fits the bare wire will fit the terminal. WAGO gives the Variocrimp 4 (item 206-1204) as an example of a suitable crimping tool. Follow the requirements for the exact connector and ferrule; see WAGO’s ferrule guidance.

How to choose the right WAGO 221
- Conductor type and size: Match the actual stranded wire, including any ferrule, to the exact model’s published range.
- Number of ports: Choose a two-, three- or five-wire variant based on the conductors being joined.
- Local markings and ratings: Confirm the approvals and electrical ratings required where the connector will be used. Country-specific approvals can affect what appears on a 221 housing.

These steps describe general handling, not approval for every circuit, wire size, voltage, current or location. Follow applicable electrical codes and the exact product documentation; consult a qualified electrician when the installation or its suitability is uncertain. The cited range and strip length are from WAGO’s U.S. 221 handling instructions, not a universal specification for every WAGO connector or region.
