The steps and even the presence of a filter vary by washer type, model, and market, so check your model’s manual first—especially if you have a top-loader.
First, check which filter your Samsung washer has
Samsung’s US guidance describes a user-cleanable pump filter on front-load washers and says US top-load models do not have one. Samsung Latin America documents a drain filter on some compatible top-load models, while Samsung Australia distinguishes the pump/debris/drain filter from the water-supply mesh filter. These differences mean you should use the instructions for your exact model rather than assume every Samsung washer has the same filter or access point.
For a front-loader, the pump or debris filter is commonly behind a small panel near the lower front of the washer. It catches lint and small items before they enter the drain system. Coins, hair, and hair clips can collect there. A clogged filter may contribute to poor drainage, longer cycles, wet clothes at the end of a cycle, poor spinning, noise, or excessive vibration; those symptoms do not prove the filter is the cause.
What to prepare before opening the filter
- Check the washer’s manual for the filter location and model-specific steps.
- Have towels and a container ready to catch water. Water can remain in the washer even after a normal drain.
- Use a small toothbrush or another soft-bristle brush to clean the filter.
- If the washer recently ran a hot cycle such as Self Clean, Pure Cycle, or Sanitize, Samsung says to wait one hour for the water to cool; it may be very hot. Samsung Latin America also advises turning off and unplugging the washer before cleaning.
How to clean a front-load Samsung washer’s pump filter
- Open the access panel. Find the pump-filter panel, commonly near the bottom front, and press it to open. The panel design can vary.
- Drain the remaining water. Put a towel and container under the access area. Pull the emergency drain hose out of its clip and hold it over the container. Twist off the cap and let the water drain fully. The cap may be tight because it forms an airtight seal.
- Remove the filter. Once the hose has finished draining, turn the pump filter counterclockwise. Some models use a push-in-and-twist motion, so follow the manual if the filter does not turn as expected.
- Clean the filter and check the housing. Rinse away dirt and debris, using a small toothbrush or other soft-bristle brush as needed. Check that the drain-pump impeller inside the filter housing is clear.
- Reinstall and close up. Turn the filter clockwise until it is secure in the vertical position. Replace the emergency hose cap firmly, return the hose to its clip, and close the access panel.
If you have a top-load washer or another filter design
Do not use the front-load steps unless they match your model. Samsung US says its top-load washers do not have a pump filter; Samsung Latin America describes a drain filter at the back on compatible top-load models. For those compatible models, the regional instructions are to place a cloth, towel, or container below the filter, turn its knob counterclockwise to remove it, clean it under running water with a soft brush, then reinstall it clockwise until locked. Some water may remain. Consult your own washer’s manual before attempting this procedure.

- If your Samsung washer is leaking when you use it again after cleaning the original filter with a lock, consider replacing this non lock filter! Avoiding flooding in your home.
The water-supply mesh filter is a different component from the pump/debris filter. Samsung Australia’s guide distinguishes the two; do not remove or clean one as though it were the other.
How often to clean the filter
Follow the maintenance interval Samsung gives for your market and model. Samsung US recommends cleaning at least monthly or about every 40 washes, whichever is more frequent. Samsung Australia’s regional guidance for Australian models recommends five to six cleanings per year. These are market-specific recommendations, not a single universal interval.

If drainage or spinning problems continue
Cleaning the filter can help a washer drain properly and may help prevent odors, mold, and mildew, but it will not necessarily fix every drainage, leak, noise, or spinning problem. If the procedure does not match your washer, stop and consult its manual. If the symptoms remain after cleaning, use Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance or contact Samsung Support.
