How to Build a Wood Fence: Plan, Set Posts, and Install Pickets

A wood fence starts with a confirmed boundary, local-rule checks, and utility locating. Then lay out posts and gates, set posts to local requirements, and install rails, pickets, and hardware.

Build a wood fence in a deliberate sequence: confirm the property line and local rules, call 811 before digging, lay out posts and gates, set posts plumb, then attach rails and pickets. Post spacing, hole depth, permits, and setbacks are not universal; check your local requirements and site conditions before buying materials or excavating.

Plan the fence before you dig

Start with a sketch showing the fence line, corners, gates, and any changes in direction or height. Establish the actual property boundary rather than estimating it from an existing fence or visual landmarks. Tacoma’s guidance says a licensed surveyor is the way to establish a property line with certainty; Portland also requires fence components, including footings, to remain within the property. See Tacoma’s fence guidance and Portland’s residential fence guidance.

Ask your local building or zoning department about fence height, setbacks, permits, and any rules for special districts or overlays. Check HOA requirements separately. The rules can vary even between nearby jurisdictions: Nashville’s guidance, for example, describes height limits that differ by front, side, and rear location and notes that overlays and HOA rules can add restrictions. Do not treat another city’s exemption or dimensions as approval for your property.

Before excavation, contact 811 to have underground utilities located. Plan gate locations at this stage, and allow for the gate opening and its hardware when laying out the adjacent posts.

Choose the fence style and materials

Choose a design based on the privacy you want and how closely the fence must follow the yard’s contours. Solid pickets block direct views when installed together. A shadowbox alternates boards on opposite sides of the rails, obscuring direct sightlines while allowing angled views. Preassembled panels may speed installation; building from individual components can make it easier to follow uneven ground. Lowe’s describes these options in its wood fence installation guide.

For a typical component-built project, plan for posts, rails, pickets, concrete mix, exterior-rated fasteners, layout stakes and mason line, plus gate hardware if needed. Lowe’s lists pressure-treated 4-by-4 posts and 2-by-4 lumber among its materials, along with a post-hole digger or optional power auger, tape measure, levels, saw, drill, and safety equipment. Match lumber and fasteners to the design, exposure, and manufacturer guidance.

Wood near the ground or concrete needs particular attention. Portland says wood touching concrete or within six inches of the ground must be pressure treated or naturally decay resistant; treated wood below grade must be rated for ground contact. Those are Portland requirements, so verify the applicable rules and material ratings where you live.

Lay out the fence line and post locations

  1. Mark the line. Set stakes at corners and endpoints, then run mason line to show the intended fence face. Lowe’s recommends using a 3-4-5 measurement to check a corner for squareness.
  2. Mark post centers. Space posts according to the fence design, site, and local requirements. Lowe’s describes 6 to 8 feet on center as typical guidance, but that is not a universal specification. Tacoma’s local guidance gives a different example—5-foot intervals—so do not combine or average the two figures.
  3. Lay out gate posts separately. Use the gate’s dimensions and hardware instructions to determine post positions and clearances. A gate opening may require a different layout from ordinary fence bays.

Dig holes and set the posts

There is no single correct post-hole depth or diameter for every wood fence. The required dimensions depend on the fence, soil, frost conditions, wind exposure, and local rules. Lowe’s notes that some codes require holes to extend below the frost line and gives a typical hole diameter of about three times the post width. Tacoma’s 30-inch burial guidance is a local example, not a general rule. Portland specifies 18-inch-diameter, 3-foot-deep footings for certain fences between 7 and 8 feet, with posts no more than 6 feet apart unless engineered. Follow the requirements that apply to your parcel rather than adopting these examples as interchangeable instructions.

  1. Excavate the marked holes. Use the locally required dimensions and keep the holes aligned with the layout. Take care not to disturb marked utilities.
  2. Position and brace each post. Set the post in its hole, check it for plumb with a level or post level, and brace it so it cannot shift while the footing is placed.
  3. Place concrete as directed. Lowe’s describes adding a small amount of dry mix at the bottom before positioning the post, then filling around it. Follow the concrete manufacturer’s instructions for the selected mix and site conditions.
  4. Finish the top and allow it to cure. Where appropriate to the mix instructions, slope the concrete top away from the post to shed water. Keep the braces in place until the concrete has cured as directed by its manufacturer.

Attach rails and pickets

Once the posts are stable, mark consistent rail heights and fasten the horizontal rails securely between them. Rails support the pickets, but the number, placement, and fastening method depend on the chosen fence design and applicable requirements. Use exterior-rated fasteners appropriate for the lumber and exposure, and follow the fence or fastener manufacturer’s instructions.

For a solid privacy fence, attach pickets side by side on one face of the rails. For a shadowbox, alternate pickets on opposite faces. Lowe’s illustrates one shadowbox layout using 6-foot pickets that are 5 1/2 inches wide, with 3 1/2-inch gaps on one side covered by the opposite-side boards. Those measurements describe that particular design, not a required or universal spacing.

Finish schedules and drying intervals vary by product and conditions, so use the specific product guidance rather than assuming one schedule fits every fence.

It also addresses decay-resistant or pressure-treated wood near grade and requires all parts of a fence to stay within the property line. See Portland’s fence, deck, and outdoor-project guidance.
  • Tacoma, Washington: The city says fences up to 7 feet can be built without a permit when its listed conditions are met, and gives examples of 5-foot post intervals and 30-inch burial. These are Tacoma-specific rules and guidance. See Tacoma’s fence page.
  • Nashville, Tennessee: Its page describes location-dependent height and setback limits and lists wood slats among generally permitted materials; overlays and HOA rules may impose additional restrictions. See Nashville’s fence guidance.

Miami’s published standard wood fence detail is a local prescriptive example referencing the 2017 Florida Building Code. Because the detail’s current applicability has not been established here, verify it directly with the city before relying on its dimensions.

Common planning mistakes to avoid

  • Digging before locating utilities: Contact 811 before excavation.
  • Assuming a fence marks the boundary: Confirm the actual property line, and keep posts, rails, pickets, and footings within your property.
  • Copying a spacing or depth from another city: Use the dimensions required for your jurisdiction, soil, frost conditions, and fence design.
  • Buying lumber before checking local rules: Verify height, setbacks, permit requirements, and HOA or overlay restrictions first.
  • Ignoring material exposure: Select wood rated for the places it will contact ground or concrete, and use suitable exterior fasteners.
