You can build toward a lower-smoke wood fire by understanding the airflow used in commercial double-wall pits—but the available guidance does not establish tested dimensions, materials, or a complete safe construction plan for a homemade unit. Treat “smokeless” as a design goal, not a promise: a fire may still smoke, especially during startup or when it is not burning hot and cleanly.
How a low-smoke fire pit works
Commercial double-wall designs use a lower air intake, a heated passage between inner and outer walls, and outlets near the rim. Some incoming air feeds the fire directly; some travels upward through the wall gap, heats, and exits near the top. That hot air mixes with smoke and unburned gases, supporting a secondary burn.
Solo Stove describes the sequence this way: “A smokeless fire pit works by pulling air in through vents at the base, heating that air as it travels up through a gap between the two walls, then releasing it through a second set of vents near the rim.” Solo Stove’s design explanation is a manufacturer account of its own product, not a tested plan for a DIY build. Breeo likewise describes the principle as “creating more airflow and burning a hotter fire.” Breeo’s explanation also concerns its commercial system.
What you can—and cannot—use as a build plan
The available product explanations establish the general airflow concept, but they do not provide validated specifications for a homemade pit. In particular, they do not establish:

- The number, diameter, spacing, or angle of lower intake holes and upper outlets.

- A complete bill of materials, fabrication sequence, or DIY performance results.
Those choices affect airflow and durability. Do not treat guessed measurements or a commercial pit’s appearance as proof that a homemade copy will work safely. No independent smoke-reduction result for a reader-built design is established by the cited sources.
A responsible way to approach a DIY project
- Check the rules first. Look up local fire restrictions, burn bans, and permit requirements before building or using an outdoor fire pit. Local requirements may be stricter than general guidance.
- Understand the airflow path. A double-wall concept needs a lower intake, a route for air to heat as it rises, and upper outlets that release it near the fire. The sources explain this arrangement but do not specify dimensions you can safely copy.
- Resolve engineering details before fabrication. Select materials, wall spacing, openings, structural connections, and ash access using reliable engineering guidance for your exact design. The cited manufacturer explanations do not settle those decisions.
- Plan the use area and accessories. Choose a level, noncombustible location that meets local clearance rules. If using a spark screen, match its shape and size to the finished pit; safety guidance supports using a screen, not any particular model.
- Do not assume performance. A homemade pit may not produce the airflow or secondary combustion of a commercial design. “Smokeless” does not mean zero smoke, and the sources provide no tested DIY performance claim.

- Use the pit outdoors at least 10 feet from your home and anything else that can burn, as advised by the U.S. Fire Administration. Follow local rules if they require greater clearance.
- Set it on a level, noncombustible surface. Keep it away from overhanging branches, eaves, decks, vegetation, and trip hazards.
- Keep children and pets away; closely supervise children. Use a metal screen over a wood-burning fire to contain sparks.
- Burn clean, dry hardwood. The National Fire Protection Association’s educational guidance recommends hardwood seasoned for at least six months. Never use gasoline or lighter fluid to start or relight the fire.
- Never leave the fire unattended. Fully extinguish it before leaving.
- Let ashes cool, then put them in a dedicated metal container with a tight-fitting lid, away from combustibles. Do not put hot ashes in ordinary trash.
Why a DIY pit may still smoke
The airflow design supports a hotter secondary burn, but it does not guarantee a smoke-free fire. The product explanations emphasize airflow and heat; they do not validate a homemade configuration or promise zero smoke. Avoid treating a commercial marketing label as evidence of DIY emissions or performance. Follow the safety rules regardless of how little smoke the fire appears to produce.
