As temperatures cool, review each zone, account for recent rain and local watering rules, correct coverage problems, and reduce watering to match what the landscape actually needs. Before freezing weather arrives, shut off the irrigation water supply and drain the lines.
1. Check local watering rules and recent conditions
Start with your water utility or local authority’s current watering-day, drought, and seasonal rules; restrictions take precedence over a usual controller schedule. Then consider recent rainfall, the plants being watered, and how quickly your soil drains. EPA WaterSense says a landscape typically needs one inch of water per week including rain, but emphasizes that needs vary with location, recent weather, and plant type. Treat that as broad guidance—not a fall target or a controller runtime. For local recommendations, check with your utility or Cooperative Extension office. EPA Watering Tips
2. Adjust each zone to its landscape
Walk through the controller’s zones and note what each one waters: turf, trees, shrubs, or beds. Sun and shade, soil, and sprinkler type also affect how much water an area needs. Cooler fall weather often means less irrigation, but the appropriate change depends on local conditions and what you observe; do not apply the same runtime or reduction to every zone. EPA recommends adjusting irrigation schedules for seasonal changes. EPA Home Maintenance
If you see pooling, the area may be receiving more water than it can absorb. Brown spots can indicate that an area is not receiving enough, though they are a sign to investigate rather than proof of a single cause. Reassess after changing the schedule and make further adjustments based on the landscape’s response.
#1 Best Overall
- Brass Material: Brass, for your health and safety, certified to contain less than 0.25% lead. Hose Material: EPDM Rubber, EXTRMELY durable, more excellent corrosion resistance
- Max Pressure rating: 300 PSI. Temperature ranging: -22℉ ~ +250℉. Hose Pipe Length: 12 inches (approximate)
- Adapter to easily winterize underground irrigation sprinkler systems, outdoor pipes, water lines, plumbing, homes, cabins, faucets, spigots, garden hoses, sillcocks, and hose bibbs by blow out method
- Flexible hose allows the adapter to access tight spaces and minimizes stress on pipes and fittings. Easily connects to air compressor and garden faucet to winterize lawn sprinkler systems, faucets, and plumbing to prevent damage due to freezing. Compatible with standard garden hose threading and air compressor quick-connect commonly found in North America
- If you are looking for a heavy duty tool that lasts a longtime, this one is for you. Always wear safety goggles when handling or using compressed air
Use cycle-and-soak where water runs off
On clay soils or slopes, water may run off before it soaks in. Instead of applying the full amount in one long run, use shorter irrigation intervals with pauses between them. This cycle-and-soak approach gives water time to enter the soil. EPA Sprinkler Spruce-Up
3. Run the system and inspect its coverage
Test each zone while it is operating. A controller can follow its programmed schedule while a leak, damaged head, or misdirected spray wastes water. EPA recommends monthly inspection. Look for:

- ALL-IN-ONE WINTERIZATION SOLUTION – Blow out adapter for sprinkler systems, outdoor faucets, RVs, campers, and travel trailers. Includes male-to-male fitting for RV use. Safer alternative to antifreeze
- UNIVERSAL QUICK-CONNECT COMPATIBILITY – ¾"-11 NH hose threads fit standard garden hoses. ¼" Industrial Interchange quick-connect plug works with common air compressor fittings in North America
- FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE CONSTRUCTION – Kink-free Insta-Grip hose (made in USA) accesses tight spaces and reduces stress on fittings. 250 PSI rated. 100% outdoor rated, impervious to water and oil
- LEAD-FREE BRASS WITH USA CRAFTSMANSHIP – All metal parts are solid lead-free brass (less than 0.25% lead). Made in USA with domestic and global parts. Includes sprinkler winterization instructions
- FORGED LEAD-FREE BRASS SHUT-OFF VALVE – Valve is forged brass (not cast) for added strength. Also suitable for winterizing boats, drip irrigation, soaker hoses, and various plumbing applications
- Leaks, broken or missing parts, and clogged heads.
- Heads that are tilted or do not pop up fully.
- Uneven coverage, pooling, or runoff.
- Water spraying onto pavement, walls, or other areas that do not need irrigation.
Correct a head’s direction so it waters the landscape, and address problems that are safely within your ability. A broken or missing irrigation component could waste as much as 1,000 gallons of water per week, according to an EPA WaterSense checklist published in April 2020; that is an upper estimate, not the expected waste from every fault. EPA WaterSense inspection checklist
If a fault persists, repairs involve unfamiliar controls, or you need a system audit, consider a qualified irrigation professional. EPA suggests asking about the contractor’s training, how they will assess seasonal schedules, and how they will ensure the system applies only the water the landscape needs. EPA Irrigation with a Pro

- PROTECTION: Using these sprinkler winterization kit can avoid expensive damage caused by waterline freezing, and save yours headache in the spring.healthier, and environmentally friendlier winterization tool when compared with those winterizing kits that use antifreeze.
4. Decide whether automation would help
You can update a clock-based controller manually; a new controller is not required for a fall schedule change. A WaterSense-labeled weather-based controller is an optional alternative: it uses local weather and landscape conditions to adjust irrigation amount, frequency, and timing. EPA estimates that an average home replacing a standard clock-based controller with a WaterSense-labeled weather-based controller can save nearly 7,600 gallons annually. That is an EPA estimate, not a guaranteed result for an individual home. Before buying, check compatibility with your system and confirm the product’s current WaterSense certification. - Blow out plug adapter fitting to winterize underground irrigation sprinkler systems, outdoor pipes, RV, boat, watercraft, motorhome, camper, travel trailer, water lines, homes, cabins, faucets, spigots, garden hoses, sillcocks, and hose bibbs by blow out method.
- Its short and stubby design allows access to tight spaces. Quick-connect attaches to air compressor. Compatible with standard 3/4 inch garden hose threading and air compressor 1/4 inch quick-connect commonly found in North America
- For your health and safety, this sprinkler winterizer is made of lead-free brass. Always wear safety goggles when handling or using compressed air
- Easily connects to air compressor and garden faucet to winterize lawn sprinkler systems, drip irrigation system, soaker hoses, faucets, and plumbing to prevent damage due to freezing
- This heavy duty winterization tool is machined from a solid lead-free brass casting. This blow out plug may also be used to winterize sprinkler systems, drip irrigation systems, soaker hoses, faucets, pipes, spigots, sillcocks, water garden hoses, waterlines, and hose bibbs where applicable
The right method depends on the installed system. If you are unsure how to drain it, ask a local authority or irrigation professional for system-specific guidance. The available EPA homeowner guidance does not specify a universal temperature threshold or require a particular compressed-air procedure, so do not assume one blowout method fits every system.
