Store water stones according to the instructions for their exact maker and model: some can be kept wet for convenience, while others should not be soaked for long. After sharpening, rinse away residue, let water drain, and keep stones indoors where they will not freeze. Dry them as directed before putting them in a closed box.
Should water stones be stored wet or dry?
There is no single rule for every water stone. Check the makerโs care instructions before leaving a stone submerged. Norton Abrasives says frequent users may find water storage convenient, but recommends dry storage when stones will sit unused because mold can develop and water can freeze. SHAPTON, by contrast, says its stones should not be soaked for more than 30 minutes because prolonged soaking may soften them. How to put a water stone away after sharpening

Choose a container or rack without trapping moisture
A case or rack can keep stones organized, but it does not replace the stoneโs drying instructions. Suehiro describes its model 22190 as a rack with a water tank that holds two to three stones up to 200 ร 70 mm; stones are sold separately. Do not assume a closed case is suitable for a wet stone. Put a stone away wet only when both the stone makerโs and case makerโs directions permit it.

- Do not assume every water stone can remain submerged. Soaking limits vary by maker and model.
