Sharpen a hollow-chisel mortiser bit from the inside: hone its internal bevel with a size- and geometry-matched cone hone or round slipstone, then remove the resulting burr from the outside flats without forming a second bevel. Follow the instructions for your particular chisel and attachment.
What you need
- A cone hone that matches the chisel’s size and internal geometry, or a round slipstone suitable for its opening. Cones are not one-size-fits-all; Lee Valley lists sharpeners for different mortising-chisel ranges and bevels: mortise chisel sharpeners.
- For the method described by WOOD Magazine, a coarse and fine cone, 220-grit adhesive-backed abrasive on a hard, flat surface, and a 1,000-grit sharpening stone.
- A vise to hold the chisel securely. If the chisel or attachment maker specifies a different method, use its instructions.
Sharpen with a cone hone
- Secure and mark the chisel. Remove it from the mortiser and clamp it in a vise. Apply dark felt-tip marker to the inside bevel; the mark will show whether the hone is contacting the bevel.
- Hone the inside bevel. Fit the coarse cone in its handle or a cordless drill, align it with the chisel opening, and turn it slowly inside the chisel until the marker is removed from the bevel. WOOD Magazine describes this coarse hone for initial sharpening, not routine touch-ups. See its mortising-chisel sharpening procedure.
- Remove the outside burr. Take the chisel out of the vise and rub its outside edges evenly across all four flats on 220-grit abrasive fixed to a hard, dead-flat surface. WOOD Magazine specifies 10–15 strokes for this step. The goal is to remove the burr made by honing inside—not to grind a bevel onto the outside cutting edge.
- For later honing, use the fine cone. Hone briefly with the fine cone until a burr forms, then remove that burr on a 1,000-grit sharpening stone. For a touch-up, skip the coarse cone and go directly to the fine cone and stone. Judge when to touch up by the edge’s condition and cutting performance; the procedure does not establish a fixed interval.
Use a round slipstone as an alternative
A round slipstone can hone the internal bevel when it fits the chisel. The Grizzly mortising-attachment manual directs users to work from inside the chisel toward the edge, avoid sharpening the outside edge, and remove any outside burr with a flat stone. That guidance applies to the attachments covered by that manual, so check the instructions for your own chisel and attachment: Grizzly G1182 manual.
Keep the geometry straight
The hollow chisel’s bevel is on the inside, so the sharpening tool must reach and follow that bevel. The outside step is only for burr removal; treating the outside edge as a second bevel changes the cutting geometry. If you use a conventional honing guide, consult its maker’s directions rather than assuming a universal mortise-chisel angle. Lie-Nielsen says its mortise-chisel jaws increase the honing angle by about five degrees; that figure is specific to its guide: Lie-Nielsen honing guide.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- New Angle Fixing Tool - This honing guide can secure and fine-tune the angle where the chisel edge meets the whetstone, allowing the entire knife edge to be sharpened uniformly.
- Optional Sharpening Angles - Get the standard sharpening angles by adjusting the distance between the top of the chisel and the honing guide; upgraded off-center roller design improves performance with shorter planer blades.
- Compatible with Chisels & Planer Blades - You can fix the chisels and planer blades from width 0.2-2.55 inches by adjusting the knob, which covers the commonly used sizes. It is locked by a metal stud, no knife will fall off even if it is dumped.
- Wide Roller Attached - With the widened bearings-roller at the bottom, you could just scroll and forth to easily sharpen your chisel, wider wheels for greater stability, eliminating the need to worry about tipping the jig during use, ensuring that your work is done rigorously and smoothly.
- All Metal - The body was made from aluminum alloy, heavy enough to support the weight of most chisels, wear-resistant, anti-corrosion, will never get rust after years of use.

- For Accurate Honing: This chisel sharpening kit consists of a sharpening guide, a sharpening angle gauge and a sharpening angle fixture for creating straight and consistent bevel. Two adjustable jaws of the sharpener help securely clamp the blade at the correct bevel angle to whetstone surface. Make each honing accurate, consistent, and effective
- Angle Gauge & Angle Fixture: Instead of estimating the bevel angle by eye, this honing guide kit features an angle gauge to find blade’s bevel angle quickly. What’s more, our innovative angle fixture adopts a positioning block to help set the blade length precisely on it. Greatly simplify your sharpening setup process and improve the honing accuracy
- High Compatibility: Chisels and plane blades ranging from 0.1 in to 2.8 in width fit the honing guide securely, easily meeting your various honing needs. Moreover, our extended roller always ensures rapid, smooth and stable honing at the correct bevel angle regardless of blade width
- Easy To Operate: First, find out the chisel’s bevel angle with the angle gauge. Then lock the positioning block at the same angle on fixture. Place the chisel sharpening jig on fixture and adjust the knob at either side to make opening larger. Then insert the blade and make the blade tip contact the groove on the positioning block. Tighten the screw to fix the blade. Finally, Start rolling the chisel honing jig back and forth on the whetstone
- Built To Last: Mainly crafted from anodized solid CNC-machined aluminum alloy and stainless steel material, this chisel honing guide is rustproof, corrosion-resistant, and durable. Besides, high precision laser etched markings contribute to great readability under low-light conditions and will not wear out over time. A valuable addition to your toolbox

Choose a method that fits your chisel
| Approach | Best fit | Key check |
|---|---|---|
| Matched cone hone | Honing the inside bevel with a cone sized for the chisel | Confirm compatibility with the chisel’s size and geometry; use the maker’s guidance for the coarse/fine sequence. |
| Round slipstone | Honing from inside toward the edge when the stone fits the opening and bevel | Follow the instructions for the specific chisel or attachment; remove the outside burr with a flat stone without honing a new outside bevel. |
