If the gap runs along the joint, the piece is short, or similar gaps appear around a frame, fix the fit or cut instead of trying to disguise it.
Identify what kind of gap you have
- Only the outside point is open: A small tip gap on a glued wooden box corner may respond to a light burnishing repair.
- The joint is open along its length: The mating faces may not have the right angle or may not be aligned. Check the cut and test-fit again.
- A banding piece is slightly short: Carefully adjust the inside edge of adjacent pieces so they meet, removing only a little material at a time.
These methods address wooden miter joints and banding. They are not established fixes for loose structural joints, missing material, trim gaps against a wall, or a large geometric error. The sources do not give a universal filler or adhesive method for every wood, finish, or gap size.
Close a minor gap at a glued box corner
For a slight opening right at the corner’s point, WOOD Magazine describes rolling the corner fibers toward the gap with a screwdriver, then sanding lightly to even the surface. The aim is to bend delicate fibers across a small opening, not to force a broad or loose joint closed. WOOD Magazine’s corner-gap repair was published January 14, 2019.
- Check that the opening is minor and limited to the tip.
- Gently roll the corner with a screwdriver, working the fibers toward the opening.
- Sand lightly to remove unevenness; avoid sanding away more corner material than needed.
Correct a gap that follows the joint
If the miter faces do not meet vertically or the gap extends along the joint, revisit the cut angle rather than relying on the tip-repair method. Woodcraft recommends adjusting the saw blade angle and making another test cut. For pronounced or repeated gaps, check saw alignment and recut as needed. As an instructional example, WOOD Magazine notes that a 1/4-degree error at each of eight miter cuts around a four-sided frame adds up to 2 degrees. That example illustrates why a frame can show repeated gaps even when each individual cut looks close; it is not a repair-success statistic.
- Dry-fit the parts and look for where the faces stop meeting.
- Check saw alignment and blade angle.
- Make a test cut, then check the fit before recutting the project pieces.
Adjust slightly short mitered banding
When banding is only slightly short, the suggested correction is to remove a small amount from the inside edge of adjacent pieces to increase their apparent length. A hand plane can make small adjustments; check the fit after each pass. WOOD Magazine’s banding-gap instructions emphasize removing a little at a time. A table saw is discussed for repeatable cuts only when the piece is wide enough to cut safely.

Do not keep trimming if the fit or alignment worsens. Reassess before removing more material: adjustments can create new length or alignment problems.

For a new frame, glue the mating edges and tighten the assembled frame in a band clamp so pressure draws the joints together evenly. For a box, a right-angle brace can guide the glue-up and help prevent uneven clamping pressure from making the assembly sloppy. Dry-check the joints and setup before applying glue.
