How to Grow Eucalyptus Indoors: Light, Potting and Care

Eucalyptus can grow in containers, but full-sun needs and eventual size make an ordinary room a difficult fit. Learn how to assess light, potting and seasonal care.

Eucalyptus can grow in a container, but it is not a dependable choice for an ordinary room: it needs full sun, dislikes shade and may grow into a large, fast-growing tree. A very bright conservatory or other protected space is a more plausible setting. If you try it indoors, choose a species with its eventual size in mind and provide excellent drainage; pruning and a pot do not guarantee that a tree will remain small.

Can eucalyptus grow indoors?

It can be grown in a container, but the available horticultural guidance does not establish any eucalyptus species as reliably suited to a typical home year-round. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) says eucalyptus thrives in full sun and dislikes shade and waterlogged soil. Some species become large, and eucalyptus may grow rapidly in its early years. A bright conservatory or greenhouse is more consistent with the RHS guidance for tender species than a dim or moderately lit room.

Before buying, check the exact species’ mature size and consider how much direct sunlight your space actually gets. The RHS lists Eucalyptus gunnii, E. pauciflora subsp. niphophila and E. dalrympleana among popular species, but those listings are not recommendations for indoor growing. How much light does indoor eucalyptus need?

Give it the brightest suitable position available, ideally with direct sun. Eucalyptus prefers full sun and dislikes shade. The RHS’s general houseplant guidance also advises making use of full sunlight during winter, when daylight is weak. RHS eucalyptus growing guide | RHS houseplant growing guide

#1 Best Overall
Herb (4 Pack) - Eucalyptus, Aromatic & Fragrant Foliage Plant
  • FRAGRANT FOLIAGE: Beautiful blue-green foliage fills the garden with a refreshing aroma and attractive silvery color. Shipped 10" Tall by 3" Wide in 1 Pint Pot.
  • GROWTH: Fast-growing plant that can be maintained in containers or planted outdoors where climate allows.
  • CARE: Requires full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce watering.
  • HARVEST & USES: Popular for fresh and dried floral arrangements, wreaths, bouquets, and decorative home displays.
  • LIVE PLANTS: Our plants are grown exclusively for Deep Roots and The Three Company, shipped fresh directly from our greenhouse to you!

A grow light may help if natural light is inadequate, but no eucalyptus-specific lamp intensity or daily duration is established in these sources. Supplemental light should not be treated as a guarantee that a low-light room will suit a sun-loving tree.

Choose a pot and compost that drain well

Use a pot with open drainage holes. For container eucalyptus, the RHS recommends peat-free, soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 2 or No. 3, with horticultural grit added to improve drainage. Its guide allows grit to make up as much as 30 percent of the mix by volume. Do not let the pot sit in standing water: waterlogged conditions are unsuitable.

A container is a managed growing environment, not a promise of permanent small size. The RHS notes that some eucalyptus grow rapidly in their initial years, typically a metre or more annually, so account for the chosen species’ eventual size before bringing one home. Water, feed and repot by season

Watering

Keep the compost moist during active growth, but never waterlogged; reduce watering in winter. Avoid a fixed weekly schedule. Check the compost before watering, since the RHS’s general houseplant guidance advises against watering routinely without first checking whether the surface has dried. Make sure excess water can escape through the drainage holes.

Feeding

For container plants, the RHS recommends a general-purpose liquid fertiliser once a month from April through September.

Repotting

Repot every two years into a slightly larger container with fresh compost, following the RHS container guidance. A larger pot provides room for roots; it does not make a large-growing species a compact houseplant. RHS eucalyptus growing guide | RHS houseplant growing guide

Herb Combo - Air Purifier, Rosemary, Lavender & Eucalyptus, Aromatic Plant Collection in Deco Cover, 12" Tall by 6" Wide in 1.25 Qt Pot
  • AROMATIC HERB COLLECTION: Rosemary, Lavender and Eucalyptus bring together three fragrant plants for a beautiful and refreshing herb collection.
  • GROWTH: All three plants prefer plenty of sunshine and well-drained soil. Eucalyptus can grow more quickly, while Rosemary and Lavender tend to stay more compact. As they mature, they may need to be separated into individual containers.
  • CARE: Place in a sunny location and water when the soil begins to dry. Provide good drainage and avoid keeping the soil consistently wet. A bright, cooler location indoors is ideal during winter if you want to continue enjoying the plants year-round.

Lavender is valued for its fragrant foliage and flowers, while Eucalyptus is especially appreciated for its aromatic foliage. Rosemary and Lavender can be enjoyed fresh or dried, while Eucalyptus is commonly enjoyed for its fragrance.

Pruning, overwintering and propagation

Pruning

The RHS says pruning can keep plants more compact, but this should not be read as a way to contain every species indefinitely. Choose a plant whose eventual size is manageable rather than relying on repeated pruning to overcome a mismatch with your space.

Overwintering

For container plants kept outdoors, the RHS recommends a sheltered position in winter and clear drainage holes so the compost does not remain soggy. That advice does not mean every eucalyptus should be moved into a heated room; requirements vary by species and setting.

Propagation

Seed is the RHS’s preferred propagation method; cuttings are extremely difficult to root. Its guide describes cold treatment for seeds of hardy species, sowing in deep pots or modules, and avoiding root disturbance. Growing from seed is a patient propagation option, not a shortcut to a mature indoor tree. RHS propagation and winter-care guidance

Is an ordinary room, conservatory or outdoor container the better fit?

Setting What the guidance supports Key consideration
Ordinary room No species is established in the cited guidance as a reliable year-round houseplant. Full sun is preferred and shade is disliked; a grow light is only a possible aid, not a proven fix.
Bright conservatory or greenhouse The RHS notes that tender species may be grown in a greenhouse or conservatory. Check the species’ mature size and provide strong light and free drainage.
Sheltered outdoor container position The RHS gives winter shelter and drainage advice for container plants outdoors. Keep drainage holes clear and adjust watering for the season.

These are different growing settings, not a ranking of indoor species: the cited sources do not identify a best eucalyptus for a typical home or give species-specific indoor temperature, humidity or supplemental-light targets. RHS eucalyptus profile | RHS growing guide
