You should not try to turn a chainsaw into a chopsaw. The reviewed OSHA and STIHL guidance does not provide or approve a chainsaw-conversion procedure. A chainsaw and a purpose-built cut-off or chop-style saw are different tools; use equipment designed for your material and task, with the guard, accessories, and operating instructions specified by its manufacturer.
Why a chainsaw is not a chopsaw
A chainsaw cuts with a moving chain running around a guide bar. Kickback can occur when the moving chain near the bar nose’s upper quadrant contacts or is pinched by a solid object. The resulting reaction can fling the bar up and back in an uncontrolled arc, causing severe or fatal injury, according to STIHL’s kickback guidance.
A chop-style cut relies on a tool designed for that operation, with its own guarding and manufacturer instructions. The categories should not be treated as interchangeable, and a chainsaw attachment or altered guard does not make the saw equivalent to a purpose-built tool.
What OSHA and STIHL guidance says
OSHA’s portable-tool standard, 29 CFR 1910.243, includes requirements for covered portable circular saws and gasoline chainsaws. Covered portable circular saws with blades over 2 inches in diameter must have guards above and below the base plate or shoe, subject to the standard’s stated allowances for operation. Hand-held gasoline chainsaws must have a constant-pressure throttle control that shuts off power to the chain when pressure is released. The standard also directs that tools be used with the correct shield, guard, or attachment recommended by the manufacturer. These provisions are not a conversion recipe; they underscore why improvised attachments or altered guarding should not be treated as routine or safe.

STIHL publishes separate safety manuals for chainsaws and cut-off machines on its product safety page. That distinction is a practical one: consult the manual for the purpose-built tool and the operation you intend to perform rather than assuming a chainsaw can be adapted to do the same job.
Why attachment changes deserve caution
STIHL’s chainsaw safety manual warns: “Do not mount a bow guide on any STIHL chain saw. Any chain saw equipped with a bow guide is potentially very dangerous. The risk of kickback is increased with a bow guide because of the increased kickback contact area.” The warning applies to STIHL chainsaws and that specified attachment; it is not evidence about every possible attachment or every brand. It does illustrate that changing a saw’s setup can affect hazards in ways that may not be obvious. The manual also warns that low-kickback chain does not significantly reduce kickback injury risk when used on a bow guide. See the STIHL safety manuals.

Choose a tool for the material and cut
Before buying, renting, or using equipment, identify the material, the cut you need, and the manufacturer’s permitted uses. A tool marketed as a cut-off saw is a separate purpose-built tool, not a chainsaw conversion kit. The cited safety material does not establish which particular model is right for every material or task.
- Check intended use: Confirm the tool manufacturer specifies the material and operation you need.
- Follow tool-specific instructions: Use only the guard and accessories recommended for that tool and operation.
- Plan how the work will be controlled: Consider how the workpiece can be secured and how you can maintain control throughout the cut, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Stop if the setup is unclear: Do not proceed with an improvised chainsaw attachment or modified guard; ask the tool manufacturer or a qualified equipment professional about an appropriate purpose-built option.
What this guidance does—and does not—establish
The OSHA and STIHL material cited here does not provide an approved method for turning a chainsaw into a chopsaw. It also does not establish that every chainsaw modification violates a particular law. OSHA’s requirements apply as specified in the standard, and suitability depends on the exact tool, operation, and applicable rules. Check current regulations and the manual for the specific equipment before use.
