For red spider lilies, identify the plant as Lycoris radiata before planting: other plants called spider lilies need different care. Plant the bulbs with their necks exposed in rich, moist, well-drained soil, space them 6 to 12 inches apart, and water while they are actively growing. Expect late-summer or early-fall flowers on leafless stems, followed later by winter foliage.
First, identify which spider lily you have
“Spider lily” is a common name for several unrelated plants. This guide covers the red spider lily, Lycoris radiata. Check the botanical name on the bulb label or listing before using these instructions.
| Common name | Botanical name | Care distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Red spider lily | Lycoris radiata | Plant with the bulb neck exposed. Keep soil moist but well drained during growth and fairly dry during dormancy. Partial shade can favor flowering. North Carolina State University Extension and its Lycoris genus profile provide species-specific guidance. |
| Florida spider lily | Hymenocallis latifolia | A white-flowered Florida native suited to full sun or part shade and well-drained soil; UF/IFAS describes it as unable to take cold temperatures. See the UF/IFAS Spider Lily guide. |
| Coastal spiderlily | Hymenocallis crassifolia | Needs consistently moist soil and 4 to 6 hours of sun for best blooms, according to North Carolina State University Extension. |
These plants are not interchangeable: the water and climate needs of the two Hymenocallis species differ from those of Lycoris radiata. North Carolina State University Extension also lists other Hymenocallis plants under the common name spider lily.
Where and when to plant red spider lilies
Choose light and soil
Give Lycoris radiata full sun to partial shade. Flowering is best in partial shade, according to North Carolina State University Extension. Choose rich, moist, well-drained soil; waterlogging is not the goal, even while the plant is growing.
#1 Best Overall
- TEXAS GROWN SPIDER LILY BULBS are perfect for southern United States climates and have been raised locally in Texas, ready to be transplanted into your garden where they’ll sprout red flowers that burst open like a firework on 1-2 foot stalks
- THE RED SPIDER LILY acts different from your other flowers. It puts on its foliage during the winter months to take in nutrients. Then it goes dormant for the summer. When the rains come in late summer/early fall, it will pop out of the ground and bloom within a few days. Then it will go dormant for a couple more months before it puts on new foliage during the winter to help prepare for the next year's bloom.
- ALSO KNOWN AS THE HURRICANE LILY OR SURPRISE LILY, the Lycoris radiata gets its name from the softball-size coral-red flowers that appear after the cooler temperatures and heavy rains (hurricane) in late summer or early fall and have long stamens resembling spider legs. The blooms will suddenly "surprise" you by popping out of the ground and blooming a couple of days after the rains where there didn't appear to be anything planted before.
- FOLIAGE NEEDS 6+ HOURS OF WINTER SUN every day to thrive and soak up plenty of sun energy and your red spider lily bulbs should be planted at a depth about 2-3 times the height of the bulb. You can plant them anytime but avoid planting during a hard freeze
- THE RED SPIDER LILY GROWS WELL IN ZONES 7-10 and is a hardy perennial that is drought and heat resistant, often lasting decades and they multiply with new bulb offsets quite readily, so your 10 bulbs will turn into many over the years
Plant the bulbs at the right depth and spacing
Set each bulb so its neck remains exposed above the soil, and space bulbs 6 to 12 inches apart. Planting too deeply can delay flowering. A Santa Rosa County Extension handout suggests late summer or early fall in its regional context; check local climate guidance and the bulb supplier’s directions for your location rather than treating that timing as universal. The handout is available from University of Florida IFAS Extension.
Account for local winter conditions
North Carolina State University Extension lists USDA hardiness zones 6a through 10b for L. radiata and notes that cold injury thresholds vary. This range is regional plant-profile guidance, not a guarantee for every cultivar or garden site; consult local advice if winters are colder or conditions are exposed.

Water through the growing and dormant seasons
Keep the soil moist while the plant is actively growing, then fairly dry during dormancy. Lycoris radiata can tolerate drought, but it flourishes with regular water during active growth. Rich soil that drains well helps balance those seasonal needs.
Understand the flowers-before-leaves cycle
Red spider lilies bloom on leafless stems in late summer to early fall. Their strap-like leaves emerge later, persist through winter, and die back in spring. Flowers appearing before leaves are normal for this plant—not a sign that foliage has failed to grow. Let the leaves die back naturally rather than cutting them while they are still green.

Be patient with flowering and avoid unnecessary disturbance
A bulb may not flower in its first year, may take longer if planted too deeply, and may not bloom every year. Established bulbs spread by offsets and generally prefer not to be disturbed. Divide an established clump when you want to propagate it, rather than frequently lifting or moving bulbs.
Growing spider lilies in containers
Use a container large enough to accommodate Lycoris radiata’s extensive root system. There is no universal pot diameter established for the plant, so choose a container based on the number of bulbs and the room their roots need. Maintain well-drained soil and follow the same seasonal watering pattern as in the ground.

Pests, disease, and bulb safety
North Carolina State University Extension reports no serious insect or disease problems for L. radiata. The bulb has low toxicity if eaten and contains lycorine; reported effects include abdominal pain, salivation, shivering, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Keep bulbs away from children and pets who might eat them.
