For a twist bit, the X2 procedure is: align the bit in the chuck, set its depth with the sharpener switched off, then turn the chuck smoothly with light pressure until the grinding sound stops. Check that the cutting face is smooth and the heel sits lower than the cutting edge. Drill Doctor models differ, so use the manual for your exact model before sharpening.
How do I sharpen a drill bit with a Drill Doctor?
These steps follow the official Drill Doctor X2 user guide. They are for twist bits; masonry bits use a different motion.
- Insert the bit. Leave about 1/2 inch protruding from the chuck. Tighten it just enough to hold the bit while still allowing it to slide.
- Align the cutting edges. Place the alignment fingers in the bit’s flutes. Rotate the bit until its leading edge rests against an alignment finger.
- Set the depth with the sharpener off. Line up the chuck’s white triangle with the cam pin, insert the chuck fully into the sharpening port, and tighten the chuck while it is in the port. Check that the bit no longer slides in the chuck.
- Sharpen with a smooth motion. Keep the cam against the cam pin. Turn the chuck smoothly from one white guide mark to the next, using only enough pressure to keep contact. Continue until the grinding noise stops.
- Inspect the point. Look for a finely ground, smooth surface from the cutting edge to the heel, without ridges or indentations. The heel should be lower than the cutting edge; that difference creates positive relief.
How do I align a drill bit in a Drill Doctor?
For the X2, the alignment fingers must sit in the flutes, and the leading edge must rest against one of those fingers before you set the depth. This positioning helps the sharpener form the intended cutting geometry. If the bit moves after you tighten the chuck in the port, reset it before sharpening.
How do I sharpen a masonry bit?
The X2 guide gives masonry bits a separate, plunging procedure. Align the carbide insert at the end of the alignment fingers. Plunge the chuck into the port until it contacts the wheel, withdraw it, rotate the chuck half a turn, and repeat on the other side. The guide recommends starting with four plunges, inspecting the bit, and sharpening more only if needed. Do not use the twist-bit turning motion for this process.

Cleaning and maintenance
Disconnect the sharpener before cleaning. The X2 guide says to remove accumulated grinding dust with a small, dry brush or a vacuum, then dispose of it safely and in accordance with environmental requirements. Follow the maintenance instructions in your own model’s guide.
