You can make a translucent wood transom by bonding veneer to clear acrylic, then finishing it so light passes through while the grain remains visible. In WOOD magazine’s demonstration, Jim Heavey uses a two-part epoxy rather than ordinary wood glue. The key is to test veneer samples first: different veneers transmit light and look different once backed by acrylic.
Choose the veneer and substrate
The demonstrated panel uses clear Plexiglas, a type of acrylic sheet, as its transparent support. Choose veneer for the grain and degree of translucence you want, rather than assuming one species or thickness will work best. WOOD magazine’s project notes that veneer samples can transmit different amounts of light depending on their natural translucence and how they are sanded. There is no universal light-transmission figure or single best veneer specified for this method.
Before committing to a full-size panel, make small samples with the veneer and acrylic you plan to use. Compare their appearance with light behind them; this is the practical way to judge the result for your door and lighting conditions. The project is a woodworking demonstration, not a controlled comparison of veneers or adhesives. WOOD magazine’s project describes the sample-first approach and the full process.
Bond veneer to acrylic with epoxy
In Heavey’s demonstrated method, the acrylic is abraded to create a bonding texture, then cleaned before the veneer is attached. He uses two-part epoxy because ordinary PVA and hide glues do not adhere well to the dense acrylic substrate in this application. That is guidance from this particular project, not a comparative adhesive test or a guarantee for every acrylic and epoxy combination.

- Prepare a test piece. Use a small piece of the same acrylic and veneer to check appearance and confirm that the selected epoxy is compatible with both materials.
- Abrade the acrylic. Heavey uses 120-grit abrasive on the acrylic surface that will receive the veneer. Keep the surface evenly prepared.
- Remove dust. Clean the abraded surface before applying adhesive so dust does not interfere with the bond.
- Mix the epoxy as its manufacturer directs. Use the specified resin-to-hardener ratio and application instructions for the product you buy. Heavey’s project used a 2:1 ratio for his selected epoxy only; do not apply that ratio to another product.
- Apply and allow the bond to cure. Follow the epoxy’s directions for assembly and cure time rather than assuming all two-part epoxies behave alike.
For the demonstration’s project-specific details, see WOOD magazine’s instructions. Follow the selected epoxy’s safety data sheet and product directions for safe handling.
Clean up and finish without sanding through
After the epoxy has cured, Heavey lightly sands epoxy that has bled through the veneer, taking care not to sand through the thin wood. Work cautiously and inspect the surface often: aggressive cleanup can remove veneer as well as excess adhesive. He then checks the panel with light behind it, sands it, and applies lacquer in the demonstrated project. Treat that sequence as the project’s finish approach, and verify that any finish you choose is suitable for your materials and intended use.

Consider purpose-made translucent veneer
If you prefer an engineered veneer backing rather than bonding ordinary veneer directly to acrylic, Jacaranda offers TransTec, a real-wood veneer product line with backers described as having different flexibility and translucence. The manufacturer says its HD-90 fabric backer can be bonded to translucent substrates such as acrylic and glass using 3M clear contact adhesive. This is manufacturer-stated compatibility, not an independent performance comparison; check current specifications and installation directions before choosing it. See Jacaranda’s TransTec product information.
| Approach | What it involves | Best reason to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Veneer applied to acrylic | Prepare clear acrylic, then bond veneer with a compatible two-part epoxy, following that product’s directions. | You want to select and test ordinary veneer samples for their grain and light transmission. |
| TransTec veneer with HD-90 backer | Use the manufacturer-described backer and adhesive compatibility for translucent substrates; check current product instructions. | You want a purpose-made veneer backing described for translucent applications. |
Neither source establishes a quantitative light-transmission benchmark or a universal winner. Choose by testing the appearance and confirming that the adhesive system suits the exact veneer and substrate.

Check installation requirements
The cited woodworking demonstration is not a review of door, glazing, fire, or building-code requirements. Requirements depend on the door and where it will be installed, so check the applicable local rules before using a veneer-and-acrylic panel in a transom. No particular code approval or performance rating is established for this assembly.
