Choose materials and joinery for that design, cut and assemble the stand, then check that it sits level and does not wobble before placing the TV on it. The steps below explain how to plan a stand and use one published plywood cabinet plan as a specific example—not as a certified load rating.
Plan the stand around your TV and room
Before drawing or cutting, measure the TV body and its factory feet. If the TV will attach to a separate mounting plate, identify its mounting-hole pattern and check the TV’s specifications. Also measure the available floor space and account for any consoles, receivers, speakers, ventilation, cable routing, and access to power.
Choose a top width and depth so the TV’s support points rest safely on the structure. Set shelf spacing and decide where the legs or plinth will go before you cut. There is no universal stand dimension in the cited plans: size the piece for your own TV and intended layout rather than treating another project’s measurements as a general rule.
A published plan as a reference
Kreg’s DIY TV Stand is a moderate-difficulty cabinet project that states it accommodates screens up to 60 inches. That screen-size limit applies to the Kreg plan only. Its listed top, middle, and bottom panels are each 15 by 60 inches; those dimensions are project specifications, not proof that the design will safely support every TV of that size or weight. The reviewed plan does not provide a tested load rating.

Choose materials and tools for the design
Kreg’s example calls for one full sheet of 3/4-inch plywood, 1 1/4-inch coarse-thread pocket-hole screws, #10 by 1-inch pan-head screws, aluminum angle for the legs, edge banding, wood glue, and finishing products. Its tool list includes a circular saw, jigsaw, clamps, drill, pocket-hole jig, sander, miter saw, square, and tape measure.
Those materials and tools belong to that specific design. Material thickness alone does not establish capacity: spans, support locations, connections, and the intended load all matter. If your design uses a mounting plate, select fasteners according to the exact TV and mount specifications instead of guessing the screw length.

Cut, dry-fit, assemble, and finish
Use the full cut list and sequence in the Kreg plan if you are building that project; the steps here summarize its approach rather than replace its instructions.
- Make the parts. Cut the panels and other components to the plan’s dimensions. Secure each workpiece and follow the tool manufacturer’s operating and safety instructions.
- Dry-fit the assembly. Put the components together initially to check alignment, including the legs. Mark positions that need to be consistent, then take the assembly apart.
- Sand and finish accessible surfaces. Doing this before final assembly can make some surfaces easier to reach.
- Assemble the cabinet. The plan describes drilling pocket holes, assembling the lower box, attaching the top, positioning and fastening the legs, and adding the back. Follow its complete directions for screw placement and sequence.
- Use appropriate precautions when cutting metal. Kreg’s aluminum-cutting tip calls for safety glasses and says not to use that guidance to cut steel or iron.
Attach the TV using model-specific instructions
For a TV that attaches to the stand or a mounting plate, follow the TV’s own user guide for the mounting-hole spacing and bolt size and length. Samsung’s UK support guidance says the required bolt specifications are listed in the TV’s user guide; they vary by model. See Samsung’s guidance on mounting a TV on a wall or stand.

For a VESA-mounted setup, compare the TV’s weight and hole pattern with the exact hardware specifications. Perlegear identifies screen-size range, maximum weight capacity, and VESA range as compatibility checks, and advises confirming the TV details in its manual or specifications: Perlegear FAQs. Examples for other models are not a substitute for checking your own TV and hardware.
For TVs covered by Roku’s stand assembly instructions, align the stand connection points with the TV’s holes, insert screws straight, tighten until snug, and do not overtighten. The instructions apply to the Roku TV families they cover, not every television. See the Roku TV stand assembly guide.

Check level and stability before use
Set the completed stand on a flat, level surface. Before regular use, check that the assembly is stable and does not wobble. Roku’s guidance says to recheck the screws if the TV stand wobbles. Do not rely on a furniture design’s appearance or a screen-size label as evidence of a tested load capacity.
Wall-mount requirements are a separate matter: Sony’s statement that a selected wall should support four times the TV’s weight concerns wall mounting. It is not a load-design rule for a freestanding DIY stand. See Sony’s TV wall mount FAQ.
