How to Lay Sod: A Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a New Lawn

Prepare a smooth bed, install fresh sod in staggered rows, water it thoroughly, and keep it moist until the roots hold.

To lay sod successfully, prepare and smooth the soil first, fit fresh strips tightly in staggered rows, press them into contact with the soil, then water thoroughly and keep the root zone moist while the grass establishes. The most important work happens before delivery: sod dries quickly, so have the bed and water ready when it arrives.

Before the sod arrives

Choose sod suited to the site

Confirm with a local supplier that the grass type suits your climate, the amount of sun and shade, and how the lawn will be used. There is no single best grass for every site. Ask how recently the sod was harvested and coordinate delivery for a time when you can install it promptly. Virginia Cooperative Extension advises installation within eight hours of harvest; University of Maryland Extension recommends immediate installation, especially in hot, dry weather. Treat those timings as guidance, since conditions and supplier handling matter. See Virginia Cooperative Extension’s sod guide and the University of Maryland Extension sod guide.

Prepare a smooth, firm planting bed

  1. Clear the area. Remove existing weeds, rocks, sticks, and other debris.
  2. Correct the grade. Fill low spots and smooth uneven areas so water can drain as intended. Avoid leaving the soil loose and fluffy.
  3. Address soil needs. A soil test can show whether lime, organic matter, or fertilizer is needed. Follow its recommendations and local extension guidance rather than applying a universal amendment recipe. Recommended incorporation depths vary: Virginia guidance describes incorporating soil-test-recommended amendments into 4–6 inches, while Georgia guidance gives 2–4 inches for specified amendments. These are regional recommendations, not interchangeable rules. See Virginia Cooperative Extension and the University of Georgia Extension soil-preparation guide.
  4. Make the surface firm and even. Rake it smooth and settle it enough to support the sod without creating a hard, compacted crust.
  5. Set up water. Make sure a hose or irrigation system can reach the whole area before installation starts.

If the soil surface is dry when you are ready to lay sod, moisten it lightly. It should not be muddy. Iowa State University Extension’s watering guidance for newly sodded lawns and guide to sodding a new lawn cover site preparation and establishment.

How to lay sod

  1. Start with a straight edge. Use a sidewalk, driveway, or taut string line to guide the first row.
  2. Fit strips edge to edge. Place each strip snugly beside the previous one. Do not overlap strips or stretch them to cover a gap.
  3. Stagger the end seams. Offset the joints between rows, like bricks, so seams do not line up across the lawn.
  4. Cut to fit. Use a sharp knife to trim edges, curves, and obstacles. Fill small openings with a piece cut from a scrap rather than stretching a strip. Plywood can help distribute your weight while working on newly laid sod.
  5. Work carefully on slopes. Begin at the bottom and lay strips across the slope. Steep slopes may need stakes or pins to hold sod in place. Water gently enough to avoid washing soil downhill.
  6. Press sod into contact with the soil. A light pass with a lawn roller can reduce air pockets and smooth minor irregularities. Rolling is not always necessary on a well-prepared bed: University of Delaware Cooperative Extension notes that thorough watering may provide sufficient contact. Avoid treating a heavy roller as a requirement.

For additional installation detail, see University of Maryland Extension, UC Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension guide to buying and installing certified sod.

How to water newly laid sod

Water immediately after installation. Apply enough to wet the sod and the soil beneath it, then check beneath a lifted edge to make sure moisture has reached the root zone. During early rooting, keep the sod and the soil directly under it moist without leaving them persistently saturated.

There is no universal watering schedule. Iowa State University Extension suggests daily morning watering for the first 7–10 days, with another watering in the afternoon possible in warm weather. Heat, wind, soil, and grass type change how quickly the site dries; check moisture under the sod and follow local extension recommendations rather than applying that schedule unchanged everywhere. See Iowa State’s watering guidance and Penn State Extension’s lawn-establishment guidance.

How long sod takes to root, and when to use the lawn

Rooting estimates vary with weather and site conditions. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources and Iowa State give estimates of about 10–14 days; University of Maryland gives two to three weeks. Treat these as approximate ranges, not a guaranteed deadline. To check, gently lift a corner of a strip. Roots that have begun to take hold should resist lifting.

Keep foot traffic off the lawn until it is rooted. Once established, gradually reduce watering frequency and water more deeply. Begin mowing only when the sod resists lifting and the mower will not shift it; set the mower higher for the first few cuts. Purdue Extension discusses establishment and mowing in its guide to establishing a lawn from sod.

Common installation mistakes to avoid

  • Preparing after delivery: Have the bed ready so the perishable sod is not left waiting.
  • Leaving gaps or overlaps: Fit edges snugly without stretching; stagger seams and use cut pieces to fill openings.
  • Laying on a muddy or lumpy surface: Lightly moisten dry soil, but keep the bed firm, smooth, and workable.
  • Assuming a fixed watering plan works everywhere: Check the soil under the sod and adjust to local conditions.
  • Walking or mowing too soon: Wait for roots to hold the sod in place.
