Build a practical soil sifter by sandwiching half-inch hardware cloth between two layers of a shallow wooden frame. The University of California Cooperative Extension Sacramento County design is sized to rest on a standard wheelbarrow, so screened compost or soil falls directly into the container.
Materials and cut list
This wheelbarrow-fitting design uses redwood or cedar boards, mesh, glue and screws. Gather:
- 1/2-inch hardware cloth, initially 24 by 29 inches
- Three 1-by-2-by-8-foot redwood or cedar boards
- 24 deck or drywall screws, 1 1/4 inches long
- Wood glue
- Wire snips
- A drill with screw bits
Cut the lumber into four 21-inch pieces, two 24-inch pieces and two 29 1/2-inch pieces. Trim the hardware cloth to 23 1/2 by 29 inches, removing sharp wire ends. These dimensions come from the UC Cooperative Extension Sacramento County compost sifter plan.
How to assemble the sifter
- Cut the components. Cut the boards to the lengths above and trim the mesh with wire snips. Handle the cut edges carefully; the plan specifies trimming off sharp ends.
- Lay out the frame. On a worktable, arrange the wood pieces according to the UC plan. Place the mesh over the strips so its edges rest on supported wood. Preserve the spaces in the frame that let it sit on the wheelbarrow.
- Capture the mesh. Apply glue at the corners and along the wood pieces, then place the remaining wood pieces over the mesh. The screen edges should be held between the wood rather than left loose.
- Fasten the assembly. Drive screws through the frame from both sides. At the corners, position screws on both sides to help control the torque created by the weight of compost.
- Allow the glue to dry. UC Cooperative Extension’s instructions say, “Let glue dry for 24 hours before using.”
Choose mesh and adapt the design
The UC plan uses 1/2-inch hardware cloth. North Carolina State Extension also describes a wood-frame screen made with half-inch mesh hardware cloth. ABC Gardening Australia documents a separate sieve with 1-centimeter-square wire mesh and a 45-by-45-centimeter frame. These are examples rather than a universal mesh-size recommendation: the opening size determines what can pass through, and the useful choice depends on the material and how fine you want the screened result to be.

Set the sifter over a wheelbarrow, or incline it on the ground. Add compost or soil and scrape it across the mesh with a gloved hand or a square-end shovel. Fine material that passes through collects below; return larger unfinished compost pieces to the pile to continue decomposing. NC State Extension describes both wheelbarrow use and scraping compost across a screen.
