Ornamental portulaca, or moss rose (Portulaca grandiflora), grows best in full sun and freely draining soil. Sow its tiny seeds after frost danger has passed, barely cover them, and let the soil dry between waterings. It tolerates heat and drought, but persistently wet roots can rot.

Which portulaca is this guide about?

This guide covers ornamental moss rose, Portulaca grandiflora: a low-growing annual with fleshy leaves and colorful flowers. The common names “purslane” and “portulaca” can refer to different plants. Common purslane, P. oleracea, is a separate species; do not assume that advice about eating it applies to ornamental moss rose.

Choose a sunny spot with good drainage

Sunlight

Plant moss rose in full sun. Many varieties open their flowers in bright sunlight and close at night or on cloudy days. Some newer cultivars may stay open longer during the day, but flowering behavior varies by variety.

Soil and placement

Use soil that drains freely. Sandy, gravelly, rocky, or relatively lean soil can suit moss rose; heavy or persistently wet soil raises the risk of stem, root, or crown rot. It works well as a low edging plant or groundcover in hot, dry areas, in rock gardens and crevices, and in pots or hanging baskets. It is not suited to foot traffic.

For a container, choose a pot or basket with drainage holes and a potting medium that does not stay soggy. A container can dry faster than a garden bed, so check its soil rather than assuming it needs the same watering as nearby plants.

How to sow and establish moss rose

Start seeds indoors

  1. Sow indoors about 4–8 weeks before your area’s average last frost date, following the seed packet directions for your variety.
  2. Barely cover the tiny seeds. Mixing them with a little sand can help distribute them evenly.
  3. Handle young seedlings gently when planting out. North Carolina State Extension notes that moss rose does not take well to transplanting, so avoid disturbing the roots more than necessary.

Direct-sow outdoors

  1. Wait until frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed. The right date depends on your local climate.
  2. Sow the seeds where the plants will grow, scattering them thinly and barely covering them.
  3. Keep the soil from drying out during germination, without leaving it waterlogged. The University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension gives a germination range of about 1½–2 weeks.

Moss rose is frost tender, so freezing weather can damage plants. If you are unsure whether conditions are warm enough, wait until frost risk has passed rather than sowing by a fixed calendar date.

Watering and seasonal care

Fleshy leaves and stems help moss rose tolerate heat and dry conditions. It can grow and flower more lushly with sufficient moisture, but there is no universal watering schedule: rainfall, soil drainage, and whether the plant is in a container all affect how quickly the root zone dries.

  • Check the soil before watering; allow it to drain and dry between waterings.
  • Water more attentively in containers, which may dry faster than garden beds.
  • Do not keep the soil persistently wet. Poor drainage and excess moisture can lead to rot.

Pinch growing tips or remove spent flowers to encourage flowering and reduce self-seeding. If stems become straggly, prune or shear the plant midseason for a neater, fuller shape.

Propagation and self-seeding

Seed is the usual way to grow many moss rose varieties, and seed mixtures are available. Some newer cultivars are propagated from cuttings. Broken stems may root when the soil is moist enough, but avoid keeping the growing area wet simply to encourage rooting.

Moss rose can self-seed. Deadhead spent flowers if you want to limit volunteer seedlings; otherwise, leave some flowers to mature and watch for seedlings in later growing seasons.

Common problems and flower behavior

  • Rot: Stem, root, or crown rot is associated with wet soil or poor drainage. Improve drainage and let soil dry between waterings.
  • Aphids or slugs: These may appear occasionally. Check plants when growth looks damaged or distorted and identify the pest before choosing a control.
  • Flowers closing: Many varieties close at night and on cloudy days. This is normal for those varieties; some newer cultivars may remain open longer in daylight.
  • Leggy or straggly growth: Pinching or a midseason trim can help produce a tidier, fuller plant.

Edibility and pet safety

Do not treat ornamental moss rose as an edible plant or assume that it shares the safety profile of common purslane. Extension sources differ on whether moss rose seeds are edible, and the available guidance does not settle that disagreement with a directly consulted veterinary source. Do not eat ornamental P. grandiflora; if a pet has eaten it, consult a veterinarian or an appropriate animal poison-control service for advice specific to the animal and exposure.
