Plant repeated groups of the same flower species rather than scattering single plants through a bed. These visible patches—called drifts—can help pollinators find flowering plants while giving the garden a clear layout. Choose plants suited to your region and site, and combine species that bloom at different times.
What is a planting drift?
A drift is a group of plants of the same species planted together. Repeating patches of color makes flowers easier to notice than isolated specimens; Penn State Extension says pollinators are more likely to find plants in gardens with larger drifts of color (Penn State Extension).
Drifts can be arranged as informal clusters or repeated bands through a bed. The goal is not a particular geometric pattern, but recognizable patches of flowering plants rather than one of each species scattered throughout the garden.
How many plants should go in each drift?
There is no established universal minimum or proven optimum. Extension and outreach recommendations differ: Cornell Cooperative Extension advises at least three plants per species, Hastings Pollinator Pathway suggests groups of three to nine, and Penn State’s rights-of-way guidance suggests at least five for most plants (Cornell Cooperative Extension; Hastings Pollinator Pathway; Penn State Extension).

Use these counts as practical starting points, not biological thresholds. Let mature plant size and the available bed area determine the final group. In a small garden, begin with two or three species and repeat each in groups where the space allows.
How to plan a drift planting
- Assess the site. Note the available space, sun exposure, and soil moisture. Select plants that suit those conditions and your region.
- Choose a few species to start. Two or three species make a manageable first planting; add more as space and experience allow.
- Check mature size and spacing. Use the plant label or local extension advice for planting distances. There is no reliable universal spacing figure that applies to all species.
- Sketch repeated patches. Group each species together, then repeat its patch elsewhere in the bed if there is room. Place plants according to their mature height and spread so the layout fits the site.
- Stagger flowering times. Combine species with different bloom periods to provide flowers from spring through fall rather than concentrating all the bloom in one part of the season.
- Plant and maintain for establishment. Follow the selected plants’ growing instructions and adjust the layout as you learn how they fill the space.
Which flowers should you group together?
Favor locally appropriate native plants that provide nectar and pollen. Combine different flower shapes, such as tubular, bowl-shaped, and flat-topped blooms, to serve a wider variety of pollinators. Cornell Cooperative Extension lists asters, coneflowers, milkweed, bee balm, and sunflowers among possible examples, but suitability depends on local conditions (Cornell Cooperative Extension, “Gardening With Pollinators in Mind”).

Check bloom timing as well as appearance when selecting plants. A mix of species that flower in different parts of the growing season helps extend the availability of food. Some pollinators also need host plants for their young; for example, Cornell notes caterpillar food plants including carrot, dill, parsley, and milkweed. Local extension guidance can help you choose species appropriate to your area.
Choose a planting approach that fits the space
| Approach | Good fit when | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Group nursery-grown plants into drifts | You want a deliberately composed bed or have room to position individual groups. | Choose species for local conditions and follow their labels for mature size and spacing. |
| Repeat larger masses of the same species | You have a larger bed and want broad, repeated patches of color. | Use mature spread and available space to set group size; no single count is established as optimal. |
| Sow a native wildflower seed mix | You are planting a seeded area or prefer a less individually arranged layout. | Select a mix suited to your region and site rather than a generic pollinator blend. |
The available guidance does not establish through controlled comparisons that one of these approaches attracts more pollinators than another. Choose based on space, site suitability, and the garden style you want.

Support pollinators beyond the flowers
Flowering plants are only one part of a pollinator-friendly garden. Cornell Cooperative Extension recommends providing water and nesting places, such as bare ground, along with shelter from stones or branches. Retaining some leaf litter and flower stems can also provide habitat. The same guidance advises reducing or eliminating herbicide and pesticide use because pesticides can put beneficial insects at risk (Cornell Cooperative Extension).
These features complement the planting pattern: flowers provide food, while suitable nesting and shelter areas and lower pesticide use support pollinators through more of their life cycle.

Small gardens can start with a few patches
A pollinator planting does not need to fill a large landscape. Start with a few regionally suitable species, group each species rather than planting isolated singles, and repeat patches if the bed permits. For a seeded area, choose a locally appropriate native mix. Let site conditions and mature plant size guide how much you plant.
