For white, crusty mineral deposits on an unglazed clay or terracotta pot, empty the pot, soak it in three parts water to one part vinegar, brush off the loosened residue, rinse thoroughly, and let the pot dry before reusing it. White material can also be mold, so check the surface and how wet the pot stays before treating every patch as salt.
Check whether the white residue is salt or possibly mold
White deposits on unglazed terracotta are commonly mineral salts carried by water and fertilizer through the pot’s porous clay. As Ask Extension explained in a May 8, 2021 response, these minerals can build up and show on the surface. Iowa State University Extension and University of Florida IFAS describe the same leaching process.
Salt residue is typically a crusty or powdery deposit. Mold is another possibility, particularly if the pot surface stays consistently wet. Maryland Extension recommends brushing suspected surface material away under running water and checking whether the pot remains wet. If the pot is dry and the material brushes away easily, do not assume it needs another vinegar treatment.
Remove ordinary mineral stains
- Empty the pot. Remove the plant and potting mix before soaking the pot in vinegar solution.
- Mix the solution. Combine three parts water with one part vinegar. This is the dilution recommended in the Ask Extension answer, not a universally tested optimum.
- Soak, then brush. Soak the empty pot so the deposits loosen, then scrub them with a brush. Iowa State also lists steel wool or a wire-bristle brush for clay-pot deposits. Use gentle pressure if the pot is fragile or its finish is uncertain; the cited guidance does not compare tools on painted or decorated pots.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse the pot thoroughly with clean water and let it dry before putting the plant back.
For a lightly stained pot, you can first try brushing the dry deposits away. Florida IFAS gives a 50:50 water-and-vinegar mixture as an option if stains persist after brushing and washing. These are different extension recommendations; the sources do not establish one best concentration or a controlled comparison of methods.

When to stop cleaning and use a different pot
If a pot is heavily coated in white salt or the residue persists, consider replanting into a clean container. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources notes that clay can absorb salts and advises using a clean container when the pot has a white salt coating. This caution applies to heavily coated pots, not every pot with a small stain.
Clean mineral deposits separately from disinfecting
Removing salt is not the same as sanitizing a used container. If a pot held a diseased plant and needs disinfection, follow Iowa State Extension’s separate directions for container disinfection. Do not mix bleach and vinegar; vinegar is included here as a mineral-deposit cleaning solution, not as a disinfectant.

What causes the stains—and what prevention guidance establishes
Water and fertilizer can leave mineral salts that move through porous clay and accumulate on the outside. The cited extension guidance identifies that cause but does not establish a prevention schedule or guarantee that switching water will keep the pot exterior stain-free.
