Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEmpty the bin, loosen stuck scraps with hot water, wash the surfaces with a little dish soap or diluted white vinegar, scrub, rinse, and let it dry before using it again. Cleaning frequency and rinse-water disposal depend on the type of bin and local rules: a kitchen caddy, municipal green cart, and active compost pile are not the same thing.
How to wash a kitchen caddy or outdoor green cart
- Empty it. Remove scraps and any loose debris.
- Loosen residue. Add hot water and leave it for a few minutes if food is stuck to the sides or base.
- Wash. Use a small amount of dishwashing liquid, or dilute white vinegar with water. The City of Darebin suggests equal parts vinegar and water; the City of Pointe-Claire gives a different local recipe of 25 ml white vinegar per litre of water. These are municipal examples, not a universal required ratio.
- Scrub all surfaces. Clean the sides, bottom, rim, lid, and corners. A long-handled brush or broom can help reach the base and corners.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse thoroughly and allow the bin to dry fully before putting scraps back in.
- Dispose of the rinse water according to local instructions. Guidance differs: Portland and Hamilton advise using grass or gravel, while Darebin recommends a household drain, such as a sink or toilet, and warns against stormwater drains. Follow your municipality’s direction; do not pour dirty wash water into a storm drain unless your local authority explicitly says to.
Check the bin maker’s instructions before using a dishwasher or any cleaner beyond ordinary dish soap or vinegar. Municipal advice varies, so avoid treating a chemical such as bleach as a default cleaner unless your local service or the bin manufacturer specifically directs you to use it.
How often should you clean it?
Use the condition of the bin and local collection guidance rather than assuming one schedule fits every household. For example, Portland recommends a quick rinse when a kitchen container is emptied and a thorough soap scrub or dishwasher cleaning at least weekly. Hamilton recommends rinsing its mini bin daily and its outdoor green cart weekly. These are local recommendations, not a universal standard. Clean sooner if scraps or liquid leave visible residue or the container develops an odor.
Keep odors and pests from coming back
For a kitchen caddy or collection cart
Reduce liquid and damp residue before they build up. Portland suggests draining liquids from food scraps and lining the bottom of a cart with paper or leaves. Hamilton advises balancing wet and dry material and using paper or other dry material to absorb liquid. Follow your local program’s rules about acceptable liners and materials.

For an active compost pile
Washing the empty container will not correct every compost odor. The US Environmental Protection Agency says a bad smell can indicate that a home compost pile is too wet or lacks air circulation; its guidance is to add dry material and turn the pile. For rodent prevention in a home compost pile, EPA recommends a secure lid, covering and burying food scraps, and maintaining a suitable balance of carbon-rich browns and nitrogen-rich greens. Those are compost-management steps, not cleaning-product instructions.

A worm bin is an active composting system, not an empty collection cart. The municipal cleaning instructions above are for caddies and organics carts; they do not establish a cleaning schedule or chemical-cleaning method for a working worm bin. Avoid applying the wash-and-scrub routine to the active contents. If you need to clean a worm-bin container, follow its manufacturer’s or local composting program’s care instructions.
