Those are seller claims, not a national average or a guarantee for any particular appliance. The right deal depends on the exact model, its condition, and what the price includes.
What discounts do retailers advertise?
The figures below are examples from individual retailers. They use different comparison prices and should not be treated as directly comparable market-wide rates.

These advertisements do not establish a representative national or regional average. A percentage can also look more impressive when it is calculated against MSRP rather than the current price for the same model.
What does “dented” or “scratch-and-dent” mean?
Outlet labels can describe different inventory histories, and retailers do not all use them identically. Ask about the specific appliance rather than assuming the label tells you everything about its condition or coverage.

Scratch-and-dent
Usually this label refers to cosmetic damage, but confirm the location and severity of the damage and whether the seller has documented it as cosmetic. Appliance Outlet Canada distinguishes scratch-and-dent units as having minor cosmetic damage. The Appliance Outlet describes its scratch-and-dent stock as new with cosmetic imperfections.
Open-box and floor-display
Appliance Outlet Canada describes open-box units as returned or displayed but unused, according to its FAQ. Yale Appliance says its own outlet includes floor displays, scratch-and-dent, discontinued, and overstock appliances, and that it does not sell used or reconditioned products through that outlet. These are descriptions of those retailers’ own inventory, not universal definitions or guarantees.

How to tell whether a specific offer is worthwhile
- Compare the same model. Check the offer against a current price for the identical model, not just MSRP or a similar appliance. Calculate the savings from that comparison price.
- Get the damage details. Ask where the dent or scratch is and whether the seller confirms in writing that it is cosmetic and will not affect operation, fit, finish, or installation. Request clear photos or inspect the unit if practical.
- Check completeness. Confirm that required parts and accessories—such as shelves, hoses, manuals, or installation components—are included, and ask for the inspection or condition notes.
- Read the warranty terms for that unit. Confirm who provides service, when coverage starts, what is excluded, and whether the blemish is recorded as a pre-existing condition. Do not assume a low price means manufacturer warranty coverage.
- Check the exact return policy. Outlet terms may differ from the seller’s standard new-in-box policy. Confirm eligibility, deadlines, and any fees before purchase.
- Calculate the delivered total. Include delivery, installation, haul-away, and any other required charges. Ask whether the retailer serves your area and whether the advertised price depends on a particular service or delivery arrangement.
- Verify stock before committing. Appliance Outlet Canada says its inventory turns over quickly and recommends calling to confirm that a specific unit is still available.
Why the fine print can change the deal
Retailer-specific terms illustrate why a discount alone is not enough to judge an offer. Yale Appliance says its outlet pieces are inspected and their cosmetic notes recorded; its page also says coverage begins on delivery and that its stated 15-day return eligibility applies to appliances that are new in box. Those details apply to Yale’s stated policies and should not be generalized to another seller or to every outlet item.
For two candidate appliances, compare the current same-model price and final delivered cost alongside condition, included parts, inspection documentation, warranty provider and start date, return eligibility, and service terms. A larger advertised markdown may be less valuable if the unit has a more visible blemish, missing components, limited return rights, or higher delivery and installation costs.
