For outdoor garden mums, start with a light application of slow-release fertilizer as new growth appears in spring, then adjust to your soil, local guidance, and the product label. Mums do not have one universal fertilizer formula or schedule: too much can produce lanky, floppy plants, and summer feeding may be unsuitable when you want plants to overwinter.

When should you fertilize garden mums?

For established outdoor garden mums, spring—when new growth begins—is a sensible starting point. Iowa State University Extension recommends slow-release fertilizer at that stage for garden mums in Iowa. Its advice is regional, so use local extension guidance and your fertilizer label rather than assuming the same timing suits every climate or soil.

Whether to feed again in summer depends on your conditions and goal. Iowa State advises against summer fertilization in Iowa when the aim is winter survival, because late-season growth can be undesirable. Other extension programs describe midsummer or repeat applications, so do not treat a second feeding as automatic.

Which fertilizer should you use?

No single formula is established as best for every garden. Extension recommendations include slow-release fertilizer, a diluted 5-10-5 feed, and complete fertilizers such as 10-10-10. Choose a product suitable for garden use and apply it according to its label; account for your soil and avoid combining multiple programs.

  • Slow-release fertilizer: Iowa State recommends applying it around garden mums as new growth begins in spring.
  • Water-soluble 5-10-5: Virginia Cooperative Extension gives a regional example of one tablespoon per gallon of water, applied weekly to every ten days until flowers show color. It favors weak, frequent applications over heavy, infrequent feeding. This is a specific program, not a universal dose.
  • Complete fertilizer such as 10-10-10: Purdue Extension recommends one or two light applications at five pounds per 100 square feet, with the first just before planting and a possible second in midsummer. Follow local advice and the product label; this regional program is not interchangeable with the other schedules.

How often should you feed mums?

Frequency depends on the fertilizer form and the particular regional program. Slow-release spring feeding is one option for established garden mums. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s diluted-feed example is weekly to every ten days until flowers show color. Purdue describes one or two light applications, while Utah State University Extension offers legacy guidance to fertilize about four weeks after planting and repeat later only if growth is not vigorous. Do not stack these schedules; select the one that fits local guidance, soil conditions, and the fertilizer label.

Utah State’s legacy recommendation is to work fertilizer into very poor soil before planting, then apply 1 to 1½ pounds per 100 square feet of 5-10-5, 7-6-5, or similar garden fertilizer about four weeks after planting. The page’s publication date is not confirmed, so treat this as regional background rather than a default prescription.

How can you tell whether mums need more fertilizer?

Virginia Cooperative Extension notes that heavy stems and thick, dark-green leaves may indicate adequate feeding, while small, light-green leaves and weak stems can suggest something is lacking. Those signs alone do not identify the cause; soil conditions and other growing problems can also affect growth. Avoid increasing fertilizer solely on the basis of appearance when a soil diagnosis or local advice can help clarify the issue.

Can you over-fertilize chrysanthemums?

Yes. Excess fertilizer can make garden mums lanky and floppy, according to Iowa State University Extension. Heavy feeding is not a shortcut to stronger plants. Use light applications, respect the label, and avoid adding fertilizer when plants are already growing well unless a locally appropriate plan calls for it.

Does the same advice apply to florist mums?

No. The recommendations here concern outdoor garden mums. Florist mums and commercial greenhouse crops are different contexts; greenhouse feeding rates should not be transferred to a backyard bed. Iowa State notes that florist mums generally do not perform well outdoors in Iowa, and the cited extension guidance does not establish a broadly applicable household feeding schedule for indoor florist mums.
