How to Choose the Right Extension Cord for Any Job

Choose an extension cord by matching its length, wire gauge, electrical rating, plug and environment to the equipment—not by reach alone.

Choose the shortest cord that reaches without pulling, then make sure its rating, wire gauge, plug and environment match the equipment. Check the tool or appliance nameplate and the cord label before connecting them. Extension cords are temporary power—not a substitute for permanent wiring.

Start with the equipment and the distance

Read the equipment nameplate for its wattage or amperage, then compare that load with the extension cord’s label or packaging. The cord must be rated for at least the equipment’s requirements; do not use a cord with a lower rating. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions, especially for high-draw tools, since general charts cannot cover every product, voltage or operating condition.

Measure the route and choose the shortest cord that reaches without tension. Longer cords can require thicker wire to carry the same current. Keep the cord’s length and gauge together in your comparison rather than treating gauge alone as a measure of suitability.

Read the gauge and rating

What AWG means

AWG is the wire-size system printed on many cord labels. A lower AWG number means thicker wire. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s April 2012 consumer brochure says cords should be at least 16 AWG unless an 18 AWG cord has fuse protection. Use that as basic guidance, not a substitute for the cord’s own rating or current manufacturer instructions. CPSC, Extension Cord Safety (Publication 5032).

Outdoor use and job sites

For outdoor work, select a cord explicitly marked for outdoor use, with jacketed, weather-resistant construction appropriate to the conditions. ESFI advises using a heavier-gauge outdoor cord and one whose amperage rating exceeds the connected product’s rating. Keep it clear of water and snow, and use GFCI protection outdoors. Use extension cords temporarily and inspect them

ESFI describes an extension cord as a temporary solution, not a long-term extension of a household electrical system. If you regularly need a cord to reach a work area or appliance, have an appropriate outlet installed instead. ESFI, Extension Cord Safety Tips.
