The cover slows moisture loss while letting light in; it does not replace drainage, monitoring, ventilation, or enough light. For most home seed starting, a clean tray beneath a fitted dome, clear plastic, or a propped-up transparent bag is sufficient.
Choose a setup for your space and purpose
A simple covered tray is suited to germinating a small batch of seeds. If you want to grow seedlings beyond germination, plan for stronger light and more airflow rather than keeping them enclosed. Larger or longer-term indoor growing may call for shelving with separate lights and an open growing area; that is a different setup from a covered seed tray.
| Option | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Clear plastic or transparent bag | A few pots or a small tray | Inexpensive and adaptable, but must be propped up so it does not press on seedlings. Check that it can be opened easily for ventilation. |
| Fitted tray and humidity dome | Seed cells or pots in a contained footprint | Tidier and reusable; choose a dome that allows light through and can be vented. |
| Shelving with lights and open airflow | More seedlings or continued indoor growth | Offers room for lighting and air movement, but is not simply a covered germination chamber. |
These are functional differences, not a claim that one design works for every crop. Consider the available footprint, water containment, light access, how easily the cover opens, and whether you need a short-term germination cover or a longer-term growing area. University of Maryland Extension and University of Minnesota Extension describe clear covers for seed starting, while University of New Hampshire Extension discusses very small greenhouse structures: Maryland Extension, Minnesota Extension, and New Hampshire Extension.
Gather the materials
- A clean seed tray or small pots, preferably with drainage holes, plus a catch tray.
- Seed-starting medium appropriate for the seeds you are sowing. A fine-textured mix can be useful for some seeds, but is not essential for every vegetable.
- A transparent cover: a fitted humidity dome, clean clear plastic, or a transparent bag supported above the pots.
- Plant labels and a marker to record varieties and sowing dates.
- A grow light if you cannot provide a bright, suitable natural-light location.
- Optional: a small fan for air movement, or a heat mat only if the crop’s instructions call for one.
For guidance on containers and supplies, see UF/IFAS Extension and Clemson University Extension. A fan and heat mat are not requirements for every mini greenhouse.

#1 Best Overall
- 12-LED GROW LIGHT PER TRAY — Each of the five seed starting trays features a full-spectrum grow light with 12 LED beads, providing supplemental light for indoor seedlings.
- ADJUSTABLE HUMIDITY CONTROL — Each elevated clear dome has a vented light cover. Retain moisture during germination, then gradually increase airflow as seedlings emerge.
- 60 CELLS WITH DRAINAGE HOLES — Five clear 12-cell inserts provide 60 planting spaces. Drain holes move excess water into the clear bases and support bottom watering.
- CLEAR ROOT-VIEWING DESIGN — Transparent inserts make moisture and root growth easier to observe without repeatedly disturbing young plants. Suitable for compatible seedling heat mats.
- COMPLETE USB-POWERED KIT — Includes five inserts, five clear bases, five elevated domes, five 12-LED vent lights, one 1-to-5 USB cable and ten labels. No timer is built in; power adapter is not included.
Build your mini greenhouse
- Clean reused containers. Wash them with soap and water. Iowa State University Extension describes disinfection with one part chlorine bleach to nine parts water. Follow the current product label and handle disinfectants carefully: Iowa State’s container and supply guidance.
- Fill and sow. Add seed-starting medium to the tray or pots, sow seeds according to the packet, and moisten the medium gently. It should be evenly moist, not saturated; waterlogged medium can restrict oxygen available to germinating seeds. See Utah State University Extension’s germination guidance.
- Add the cover. Place the dome over the tray, or drape clear plastic or a transparent bag over it. Support an improvised cover so it does not crush seedlings. The cover need not be airtight: its job is to slow moisture loss while allowing light through.
- Put it in a suitable location and inspect it. Follow the crop’s temperature instructions and check the covered tray rather than assuming it will stay at room temperature. Small enclosures can become too warm in sunlight. If condensation drips from the cover, vent it; UMass Amherst Extension gives this practical ventilation cue: UMass Amherst Extension.
- Respond as seedlings appear. Open or remove the cover as seedlings emerge and provide adequate light. Air circulation helps discourage damping-off conditions, while insufficient light can cause seedlings to stretch. Advice on light and seedling care is available from Iowa State University Extension and University of New Hampshire Extension.
Keep moisture, heat, and light in balance
Moist, not waterlogged
The cover reduces evaporation, so do not water on a fixed schedule without checking the medium. Keep it moist but not saturated. Drainage holes and a catch tray help manage excess water; standing water is not a substitute for moisture in the growing medium.
Vent when condensation drips
A little condensation is a sign that moisture is inside the enclosure, but dripping is a reason to open the cover and improve airflow. Do not leave a sealed, unmonitored enclosure in place as seedlings grow. Ventilation matters because damp, stagnant conditions can encourage damping-off.

- High quality transparent plastic cell trays of this seed grow kit make it easy to observe your plants without interrupting the process.
- Adjustable vents on the humidity dome of this seed starter kit allow you to regulate the temperature and humidity of your seedling environment, so you have total control over the growing process.
- Please read the size of each parts carefully. Cells size: 1.5"x 1.5"x 2"(suitable for small seeds); Dome height: 2.75"; Product size: 14.6"x 9.84"x 5.1"
- Bottom trays of our seed starter trays can be stacked one by one to save space. Therefore, you can stack the bottom trays before the seeds germinate to save your operating space, wherever indoor or outdoor.
- MIXC Seed Starter Tray contains: 5 x seed tray, 5 x bottom tray, 5 x humidity dome, 2 x garden tools, 10 x plant labels (A must have for seedling)
Watch for heat buildup
A sunny windowsill can warm a small covered space beyond the conditions seeds need. Check the enclosure and follow the seed packet or crop-specific temperature guidance. There is no single germination temperature that applies to every plant.
Give emerged seedlings enough light
Once seedlings emerge, they need adequate light. Use a bright suitable location or supplemental fluorescent or LED lighting if natural light is insufficient. Low light can make seedlings stretch. Follow instructions for the particular crop and light fixture; there is no universal light distance that fits every fixture.

Safety and limits
- Do not make the enclosure airtight and leave it unattended; inspect it, ventilate when needed, and open or remove the cover as seedlings emerge.
- Keep plastic away from hot light fixtures and follow the fixture manufacturer’s safety directions. UF/IFAS cautions that using supplies outside their intended purpose can create a fire hazard.
- This covered-tray approach is aimed at indoor seed starting. Houseplant propagation and tropical plants with different humidity needs may require different conditions; no universal humidity percentage applies.
For the fire-safety caution, see UF/IFAS Extension.
