This guide covers that modular play-wall format—not a wall fountain, which uses a basin and pump to recirculate water.
Choose the kind of water wall you mean
“Water wall” can describe two different projects. Lowe’s modular water wall is an outdoor play feature: water enters a designed arrangement of pipes and channels, then flows down through it. A wall fountain instead recirculates water from a basin through a pump and pipe. The construction requirements are different, so decide which one you want before planning materials.

The steps below are for the play wall. Do not add a fountain pump or basin to this design unless you deliberately redesign it as a recirculating system.
Plan the play-wall layout before buying
Sketch the route water will take
Draw the wall and mark where water will enter, how it will travel, and where it will leave the structure. Consider how each pipe, fitting, or gutter will connect to the next. Lowe’s describes a customizable arrangement rather than a single prescribed plan; components should match your intended route. Check the site and support plan
Decide where the wall will stand and how runoff will be handled at that location. The project guide lists treated lumber posts and concrete mix, but does not establish universal anchoring, drainage, or structural specifications. Those decisions depend on the site and the finished layout; check local requirements and choose a support and drainage plan suited to the installation rather than assuming the materials list covers every condition.
Confirm dimensions and fit
Measure the available space and select pipe sizes, fitting types, gutter lengths, and quantities to suit the sketch. The guide does not prescribe a standard set of dimensions, fitting counts, or water pressure for every build. Dry-fit the planned components and check how they meet before fastening or applying a finish.

Materials and tools to gather
Lowe’s lists the following items for its project. Treat them as a planning starting point, not a universal bill of materials; quantities and specific sizes depend on your design and local availability.

- PVC pipe and fittings, including a hose adapter and tee fitting
- PVC cement and primer
- PVC board
- Gutters
- Treated lumber posts and a 2-by-4 stud
- Exterior wood screws
- Rope and pulleys
- Gravel and concrete mix
- Exterior paint
Tools and protective equipment listed
- Hand saw or hacksaw, and a miter box
- Drill with a small bit
- Utility knife or file
- Measuring tape and level
- Clamps
- Jigsaw
- Buckets, shovel, and post-hole digger
- Paint brush and garden hose
- Eye protection, hearing protection, and a dust mask

Build and check the modular play wall
The Lowe’s guide rates the project Advanced and estimates one weekend. Those are the guide’s difficulty rating and duration estimate, not a guarantee: site conditions, design choices, and available tools can change the work involved. Use the project guide for its illustrated, project-specific assembly details.
- Set out the planned components. Compare the materials with your sketch and confirm that the pipe, fittings, gutters, and support pieces suit the intended layout.
- Prepare the support structure. Lay out the posts and frame components according to your site plan. The guide lists treated lumber posts, a 2-by-4 stud, gravel, and concrete mix; it does not give universal dimensions or anchoring specifications.
- Assemble the water route. Arrange the PVC pipe, fittings, and gutters to create the flow pattern you planned. Check their alignment and fit before fastening or joining them.
- Secure and finish the assembly. Use the specified joining and fastening products appropriate to the components. If painting, staining, or sealing wood, Lowe’s directs builders to apply an even coat. Follow the product labels and allow finishes to dry as directed.
- Run water through the layout. Use a garden hose to check the route and observe where water exits. Adjust the arrangement if needed, and confirm that runoff goes where intended before the wall is used.
If you meant a recirculating wall fountain
A fountain is not simply the play wall with a pump added. It needs a water-retaining basin and a return path: a submersible pump lifts water through pipe, water flows down the feature, and the basin collects it for recirculation. This Old House describes a waterproof basin, rigid screen, support material, pump, and pipe, and notes that the pump needs maintenance access and must remain covered by water. Electrical components also belong to the fountain design, not the modular play-wall materials list. Danner’s Eternity page is one product example, describing an indoor/outdoor fountain with a pump and built-in LEDs; its listed power arrangement includes a six-foot cord and an IP-44-rated rainproof low-voltage transformer, with UL or ETL listing depending on model. These are product-specific details, not universal fountain requirements or parts needed for the play wall. Check the current manufacturer information for any product you consider.
