There is no universally safe schedule for spraying homemade baking soda on plants. Extension guidance discusses sodium bicarbonate mainly as a limited powdery-mildew option; a weekly interval applies to a specific vegetable-production treatment, not to every plant or DIY mixture. For a homemade spray, the guidance does not establish a repeat interval. For a commercial product, follow its label.
What baking soda spray can—and cannot—do
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Extension guidance discusses it for powdery mildew, not as a general-purpose plant spray or a cure for other diseases. Its disease control is limited: it may offer some protection when used preventively or when mildew pressure is low, but it is not a reliable fix for established disease. UF/IFAS notes that bicarbonates do not provide a high level of disease control.
Powdery mildew on some ornamentals may not need treatment at all, according to West Virginia University Extension. Consider the plant, the severity of infection, and whether treatment is necessary before spraying.
How often should you apply it?
Homemade baking soda mixtures
West Virginia University Extension gives a homemade powdery-mildew mixture of 1 teaspoon of baking soda per quart of water, but does not specify how often to repeat it. That recipe is not a recommendation to spray weekly—or to use it on every plant.

A crop-specific weekly treatment
UF/IFAS’s organic vegetable gardening guidance says a bicarbonate treatment for powdery mildew must be applied weekly in that crop-management context. It also cautions that timing and rates matter and that high sodium-bicarbonate levels can burn plants. This interval should not be generalized to other crops, ornamental plants, homemade recipes, or products with different directions.
After rain and commercial products
Bicarbonates are water-soluble, so rain can wash them off; UF/IFAS says reapplication may be needed after rainfall. That is a wash-off limitation, not a universal schedule. If using a commercial fungicide, follow its label for the plant, dose, timing, and harvest interval.

Colorado State University Extension gives a general 7-to-14-day interval for fungicides when treatment is warranted, but emphasizes following the product label. It describes a baking-soda-and-horticultural-oil approach as experimental; its general interval is not a DIY baking-soda instruction. See Colorado State’s powdery mildew guidance.
Why repeated spraying can hurt plants
Sodium can build up with repeated applications, and stronger solutions can injure foliage. UF/IFAS warns that sodium bicarbonate can damage leaves in solutions of 1% or more, or after repeated applications because of sodium buildup. The risk is also a concern when mildew is advanced: UC IPM cautions that bicarbonates should not be used on advanced powdery mildew because phytotoxicity can be severe.

UF/IFAS describes potassium bicarbonate as more effective and less phytotoxic than sodium bicarbonate. That does not make every potassium-bicarbonate product suitable for every plant: use only a product labeled for the plant and disease, and follow its directions.
Safer steps before reaching for a spray
- Test any treatment on a few leaves or one plant first and watch for injury before treating more. Wisconsin Extension specifically recommends pretesting, especially in warm weather; see its herbaceous ornamental powdery mildew guidance.
- Water in the morning so leaves have time to dry, and improve airflow around plants.
- Remove and destroy infected material rather than leaving it among healthy plants.
- Avoid excess late-season nitrogen where relevant; lush growth can make mildew management harder.
- If a labeled treatment is needed, use the directions for that particular plant and product rather than borrowing an interval from another crop or formulation.
Can I spray baking soda on plants every week?
Not as a blanket rule. Weekly application is stated for a specific bicarbonate treatment in UF/IFAS organic vegetable guidance, while West Virginia University Extension gives no repeat interval for its homemade mixture. Weekly spraying can expose other plants to unnecessary sodium buildup and leaf injury.
