How Does a Fisher 1098-EGR Regulator Work?

The Fisher 1098-EGR uses a pilot and diaphragm actuator to regulate downstream pressure. Learn the operating cycle, main components, options, and rating cautions.

A Fisher 1098-EGR is a pilot-operated pressure-reducing regulator. Its pilot senses downstream pressure and adjusts pressure on an actuator diaphragm; the actuator then moves the main valve to increase or reduce flow. In short, outlet pressure feeds back to control the force that opens the valve.

How the 1098-EGR controls downstream pressure

The regulator uses inlet pressure as its operating medium. The pilot reduces that pressure to create loading pressure for the actuator. Downstream pressure acts on both the pilot and actuator diaphragms, providing feedback as the system responds to changing demand.

  1. The pilot senses outlet pressure. The pilot’s control spring establishes the setting. Downstream pressure acts against the spring and the pressure loading the actuator.
  2. Low outlet pressure opens the pilot. When downstream pressure falls below the pilot setting, the spring moves the pilot diaphragm and opens the pilot valve. More loading pressure reaches the actuator diaphragm.
  3. The actuator opens the main valve. Loading pressure moves the actuator stem, which opens the main valve plug through a bump connection. Gas passes through the cage and into the downstream system.
  4. Rising outlet pressure closes the pilot. As demand is met and downstream pressure rises, it overcomes the pilot setting and the pilot closes. The precise closing action depends on the pilot type.
  5. Falling actuator loading lets the main valve close. Excess loading pressure bleeds downstream through a hole, orifice, restriction, or fixed restrictor, depending on the pilot. As loading pressure falls, the main valve closes; its spring and plug imbalance provide shutoff against the port and upper seals.

The pilot is the pressure-sensing controller, the diaphragm actuator supplies the force to move the main valve, and downstream pressure tells the pilot when to increase or reduce that force. Emerson’s Fisher product information and October 2022 instruction manual describe this pilot-operated arrangement.

What the regulator’s main parts do

  • Main valve: The body, plug, cage, and seat or trim form the flow-control section. The plug moves to admit or restrict flow.
  • Actuator: The diaphragm, diaphragm plate, stem, and casing convert loading pressure into movement of the main valve.
  • Pilot: The pilot senses downstream pressure and meters loading pressure to the actuator. The manual documents 6350 Series, 61 Series, and Y600AM pilot options.
  • Filter: A standard P590 Series filter is included in the pilot-operated package described in the manual.

Emerson also lists the 61 Series pilot for use with 1098-EGR regulators. Its available control styles include low-pressure, wide- or narrow-proportional-band, high-pressure, and extra-high-pressure styles. These are configuration choices, not settings that can be inferred from the regulator family name alone. See Emerson’s 61 Series pilot information.

Applications and available features

Emerson lists natural-gas distribution; fuel-gas supply to industrial boilers, furnaces, ovens, and mixers; large commercial and industrial facilities such as schools and shopping centers; plant air; and liquid service. The appropriate regulator construction depends on the service and selected components.

Among the product-page features are operation at a differential as low as 1 psid (70 mbar), stable downstream control across load or inlet-pressure changes, high turndown, tight shutoff, a travel indicator, and top-entry in-line maintenance. Emerson says an optional Whisper Trim cage can reduce noise by up to 30 dBa. Those are manufacturer-stated family features; they do not mean every unit includes every option or achieves a particular result in every installation.

The product page also says pilot bleed is routed to the downstream system rather than to atmosphere. Confirm the installed construction and suitability for the specific service before relying on a feature or performance figure.

How to identify the settings and pressure limits of a specific unit

The 1098-EGR family includes different pilots and constructions, so the model family alone does not establish a regulator’s setpoint or allowable pressure. Emerson’s manual says factory-supplied specifications are stamped on nameplates on both the actuator and main valve body; the pilot control spring range is shown on the pilot spring case. Maximum pressure ratings must account for the individual main valve, actuator, and pilot.

Emerson’s February 2016 installation guide gives a maximum main-valve inlet pressure of 400 psig (27.6 bar), or the body rating limit, whichever is lower. This is a guide-specific limit, not a universal rating for every 1098-EGR. Use the installed unit’s nameplate and applicable requirements. The guide is available as Emerson’s Types 1098-EGR and 1098H-EGR installation guide.

Safety and service considerations

Emerson directs that qualified personnel install, operate, and maintain these regulators. The installation guide calls for overpressure protection when inlet pressure exceeds the maximum operating outlet rating or when it exceeds the downstream equipment’s safe working pressure. It also says to take the regulator out of service if it vents fluid or a leak develops. Selection and protection must account for the actual regulator, adjacent piping, downstream equipment, and applicable requirements.
