Remove and wash the carafe, basket, or other detachable parts separately according to their care instructions. There is no single vinegar recipe or descaling procedure that suits every machine.
What “clean inside” means
Descaling removes mineral buildup from the brewer’s internal water path. Scale can hinder performance, according to Keurig’s brewer FAQ. It is different from washing removable parts, which can collect coffee residue, or wiping the exterior.
How to clean the internal water path
- Check the model’s instructions. Use the owner’s manual or official model support page to find whether the machine calls for descaling, routine cleaning, or both, and to identify the approved solution and cycle.
- Prepare the machine. Empty the reservoir, discard used grounds or pods, and remove any filter or other components the manual says to take out. Follow its directions for a charcoal water filter or other water-treatment component.
- Run the specified descaling cycle. Use the manufacturer-recommended solution and follow the machine’s cycle instructions. Do not assume a solution or button sequence from another brand will work for yours.
- Rinse the brew path. Complete the fresh-water rinse or cleansing brews required by the manual. This clears the cleaning solution from the machine.
Why vinegar is not a universal descaler
Manufacturer advice differs. Keurig says it does not recommend vinegar, citing inconsistent acidity, and recommends its descaling solution in its official FAQ. Cuisinart publishes vinegar-based procedures in its cleaning guidance, but gives different proportions in its model-specific and general instructions. Follow your own brewer’s instructions rather than treating vinegar and commercial descaler as interchangeable.
Wash removable parts and wipe the exterior
- Wash the carafe and filter basket as their care instructions direct. Cuisinart describes hand-washing these parts; do not assume a plastic component is dishwasher-safe.
- Clean or replace a charcoal water filter only as directed for your compatible model.
- Wipe exterior surfaces with an appropriate damp, non-abrasive cloth. Keurig says not to immerse the brewer; keep the machine itself out of water.
How often to descale
Use the interval recommended for your model and adjust for local water conditions if the manufacturer advises it. The manufacturer guidance differs: Cuisinart gives a general interval of one to three months depending on water hardness, while Keurig recommends every three to six months and says every three months is appropriate for high-mineral water. These are brand maintenance recommendations, not a universal schedule.

If you do not know the model’s procedure
Find the model number on the brewer or its label and look up the corresponding manual or official support page before running a cleaning cycle. If instructions are unclear, contact the manufacturer rather than guessing at a vinegar ratio, cycle, or rinse count.
