Test unfamiliar materials on scrap, protect the work surface, and follow the manual for your specific gun—especially for its resting position and cooldown.
Get the gun, glue, and work area ready
Check stick compatibility
Before loading a stick, check its packaging and your gun’s instructions for the correct diameter and temperature compatibility. Do not assume that every stick works in every gun. Dremel also cautions against pulling out a partly used stick while the gun is hot, because glue may spill. Dremel’s glue-gun guide explains its product-specific advice.
Wait for the gun to heat
Use the model’s ready indicator or warm-up instructions rather than relying on a universal timer. Dremel says to allow about five minutes for glue to warm in its cited guidance, and Bostik recommends approximately five minutes for its cited tool. Cricut instead tells users to wait until its indicator turns green. These are examples for particular products, not a standard warm-up time for all guns. Protect the work surface
Set the gun over a surface that can handle drips. Dremel suggests a cutting mat, baking paper, cardboard, or a silicone mat; hardened glue can be peeled from silicone. Keep the hot nozzle above the project rather than resting it on the material, which can leave burn marks. Supporting your wrist or elbow can help steady the bead. Follow your own gun’s instructions for where and how to rest it: some models use a stand, while Cricut permits its gun to rest on its side. Apply a controlled bead and join promptly
- Test the flow. Dispense a little glue onto scrap first. Squeeze the trigger gradually to get a feel for how quickly your gun feeds adhesive.
- Prepare the surfaces. Remove dust, grease, and moisture, and make sure the surfaces are dry. Cricut notes that these contaminants interfere with adhesion.
- Apply only what you need. A small, even bead is often enough; excess glue can make placement messier without improving the joint. Dremel’s advice is simple: “A little bit of glue goes a long way!”
- Bring the pieces together while the glue is workable. Apply glue to one side, then align and press the parts together promptly. Bostik tells users of its cited gun to join within 15 seconds; that timing is specific to its instructions, not a guarantee for every gun or project. Hot glue cools and sets quickly, as Cricut cautions.
For a steadier application, keep the nozzle close enough to place the bead accurately without touching the project. A light trigger squeeze and a test run on scrap help you control flow before working on the finished piece.
Choose surfaces and settings with care
Hot glue is generally more promising on textured or porous materials, including paper, fabric, and wood, than on smooth, nonporous surfaces. Cricut also lists most plastics, but plastic compatibility varies by type and adhesive; check the gun and stick guidance and test a sample before committing. A bond may loosen with moisture or heat, so hot glue is not the right choice for every construction or repair application. Bosch’s AdvancedGlue 18V working-advice manual notes that moisture and heat can weaken bonds and recommends adhesives suited to the selected processing temperature.

For heat-sensitive material, test an offcut and use a lower-temperature setting only if your gun supports it and the stick is compatible. Bosch lists 130°C for some heat-sensitive applications in its AdvancedGlue 18V manual, while excluding certain plastics; that figure is model- and application-specific. Likewise, Dremel gives 220°F for colored glue on its Glue Gun 930 example. Neither temperature should be treated as a general setting for other guns.
Troubleshoot feeding, flow, or a weak bond
- No glue comes out: Check that the stick is inserted fully and that the gun has reached its ready state. If a correctly loaded, heated Cricut gun still does not dispense, Cricut advises contacting its support team.
- The stick will not feed: Do not force the trigger. Bostik warns against forcing it; add a compatible stick if needed and give the gun time to warm it.
- The bond is weak: Check that the material is suitable, clean, and dry. Make sure you joined the pieces before the glue cooled. If the material is smooth or exposed to moisture or heat, the adhesive may not be a suitable choice.
- The glue drips or strings: Protect the work area and use the rest position specified for your model. A stand and laying a gun on its side are not interchangeable instructions for every product.
Try these basic checks before assuming the tool needs repair. Do not push adhesive through by squeezing harder; forcing the trigger can worsen a feed problem.

Use and store the gun safely
The nozzle and molten adhesive can burn skin. Keep fingers clear of both, avoid touching the nozzle to the work, and never leave an operating gun unattended. Product temperatures illustrate why care matters but are not universal operating specifications: Bosch warns that the nozzle and adhesive on its cited model reach approximately 200°C, while Cricut states a maximum internal temperature of 356°F / 180°C for its Glue Gun. Follow the safety guidance for the particular tool.
When finished, follow the manufacturer’s rest and shutdown directions, unplug the gun, and let it cool completely before storing it. For Cricut’s gun, the manufacturer says to clean it with a soft cloth dampened with water or glass cleaner and warns against flammable liquids and solvents. Cricut also says its model shuts off after 15 minutes of inactivity and reheats when the trigger is pulled; do not assume other guns have that feature.
