If your furnace will not heat, a Honeywell-branded gas valve is only one possible cause—and troubleshooting differs by control model and appliance. Start with safety: if you smell gas, leave and call for help from a safe location. Without a gas odor, limit your checks to accessible thermostat, power, and fault-code information; leave gas-system and electrical testing to a qualified technician.
If you smell gas, stop troubleshooting and leave
Do not try to start the furnace or operate electrical switches, appliances, or a phone inside the building. Leave, then contact your gas supplier or emergency service from a safe location. Resideo’s VR8305 instructions say to leave the building and call the gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone; if the supplier cannot be reached, call the fire department. The same model-specific instructions say to turn off gas at the appliance service valve—or at the LP tank—before leaving. Do not delay your exit or put yourself at risk to reach a valve; follow local emergency guidance.
This is urgent safety guidance, not a complete substitute for your local gas supplier’s or emergency responders’ directions.
Identify the appliance and exact gas-control model
“Honeywell gas valve” is not one universal part or diagnostic procedure. Resideo’s documentation covers different controls, including the VR8305 and VR8203, with model-specific instructions and ratings. Find the furnace’s make and model on its accessible rating label and the gas control’s model number on its label, but do not remove a burner-compartment cover to look for it. Use the appliance manufacturer’s current manual and parts information for that exact equipment.

A control’s appearance or brand alone does not establish compatibility. A technician can use the appliance specification and control documentation to identify the approved part and relevant ratings.
What can you check safely when there is no gas odor?
Keep checks to controls and indicators the appliance manual permits you to access. Honeywell Home’s “Why is my heating not working?” support article, updated September 2, 2025, recommends checking system power, the furnace cover, and fault indicators, and escalating persistent problems.

- Includes two 3/4 x 1/2 inch reducer bushings; Natural to LP Conversion Kit
- Pressure regulator setpoint is 3.5 inch water column
- Direct ignition or intermittent pilot
- Confirm the thermostat is set to Heat and its setpoint is above the room temperature.
- Look for a displayed furnace fault code or indicator visible without opening a burner compartment. Record the exact code or light pattern; use the furnace manual to interpret it.
- Check only an externally accessible breaker or power switch if the appliance manual permits it. Confirm that any panel you can safely see is closed and seated as the manual specifies.
Do not remove a burner-compartment cover, bypass a safety interlock, jumper thermostat terminals, probe wiring, adjust the valve, or perform a leak test. If a simple permitted check does not resolve the problem, stop and arrange qualified service.
Why a furnace may click but not ignite
A click, no-heat condition, or apparent failure to open does not by itself prove that the gas valve is defective. The heating call may not be reaching the required stage, or a safety control may interrupt the sequence. Other possibilities include an ignition-control problem, a wiring or power issue, interrupted gas supply, or a failed valve. These are diagnostic possibilities, not a diagnosis of a particular furnace.

- The WT8840 series is the Water Heater Control for trade use to replace WV8840 valves used in AOSmith and Bradford White Water Heaters. It is designed for use in Standing Pilot applications using an immersion well for water temperature sensing. An included integrated NTC temperature sensor reads water temperature within the appliance up to 221 F (105 C)
In its VR8305 service instructions, Resideo describes checking the control’s ON position and thermostat call, followed by a voltage measurement at specified terminals. That measurement is technician work for that control—not a general test to copy on another valve or appliance. Do not infer valve failure from the absence of a click or from a click without ignition.
What information should you give the technician?
Useful observations can help a technician choose the right manual and diagnostic path. Record what you can see without opening the furnace or touching gas or electrical components:

- Furnace make and model, if visible on an accessible label, and the thermostat’s mode and setpoint.
- The exact fault code or indicator pattern, if displayed.
- What happens after a call for heat: for example, whether the furnace starts, clicks, attempts ignition, or stops. Describe the sequence rather than concluding that the valve is bad.
- When the problem began and whether it is constant or intermittent.
- Whether anyone smells gas. If so, do not continue gathering information inside; follow the emergency steps above.
What should a qualified technician diagnose?
The technician should follow the furnace manufacturer’s instructions and the documentation for the exact installed control. Depending on the appliance and observed fault, diagnosis may involve the call for heat, ignition sequence, safety controls, wiring, electrical measurements, gas supply, and the control itself. Electrical testing, gas-pressure checks, leak testing, valve adjustment, and replacement are qualified-technician work performed under the applicable instructions.
For the VR8305, Resideo states, “Do not disassemble the gas control; it contains no replaceable components.” Do not force the knob or try to repair the control. Resideo’s installation instructions also warn, “Do not force the gas control knob. Use only your hand to turn the gas control knob. Never use any tools.” These statements apply to that manufacturer’s documented control; follow the exact instructions for the installed model.

Can you replace a Honeywell gas valve yourself?
Do not treat a gas valve as a homeowner replacement part. Resideo’s VR8305 installation instructions say, “Ensure installer is a trained, experienced service technician,” and direct that the installation be leak-tested. Installation and leak testing should be handled by a qualified technician under the exact appliance and control instructions.
The replacement must be approved for the appliance and match the system’s requirements. A technician comparing candidate controls needs to verify:
- The appliance-approved part number and valve configuration.
- Fuel type: natural gas or LP. Resideo warns not to use a natural-gas control on LP gas or an LP control on natural gas.
- Ignition arrangement and electrical rating.
- Capacity, pressure and regulator specifications, connection sizes, and any required conversion or accessory parts.
Matching the brand, appearance, or pipe size is not enough to establish that a control is suitable. Resideo’s product listings and instructions provide specifications for individual models, including the VR8305 and VR8203; the appliance’s parts information must still determine what is approved for a particular furnace.
