A home-built water-injection setup is not just a tank, pump and nozzle: it needs fluid-compatible hardware, metered delivery, a control strategy that suits the engine, and vehicle-specific installation and tuning. The supplied material concerns automotive water/methanol injection, not construction-site water systems. Because no vehicle, engine or controller is specified, there is no responsible universal parts list, nozzle size, wiring diagram or tune to provide.
What “water injection” means in this context
In automotive use, water injection delivers a metered fluid into an engine under a control strategy. Some systems use water; others are designed for water/methanol mixtures. Those descriptions are not interchangeable guarantees of compatibility: the pump, seals, lines, fittings and other wetted components must be suitable for the chosen fluid, and the engine-management system must be able to control delivery appropriately.
For example, Holley specifies that its 557-101 system is designed for 100% water or mixtures containing up to 50% methanol, and warns against exceeding that methanol limit or using incompatible hardware. That is a product-specific specification, not a general recipe for other systems. Holley 557-101 installation instructions.
Why a parts list is not a validated system
A working system requires more than assembling parts that appear to fit. Its storage and fluid-delivery components, metering hardware, control inputs, safeguards and engine calibration must work together for the particular vehicle. The available product documentation does not establish a universal pump, nozzle, mixture, wiring plan or tune for an unspecified engine. It also provides no measured results for a home-built setup, so claims about power, temperature, reliability, fuel economy or emissions would be unsupported.

Control arrangements differ. Holley says its 557-101 is designed for Holley HP and Dominator EFI, and explicitly states that it is not a stand-alone system. Its instructions specify additional pump and solenoid/nozzle components, including named Holley part numbers, and describe control through the EFI injector drivers. Holley installation instructions. Bosphorus Innovations describes a separate system using a standalone ECU with configurable TPS, MAP or engine-load inputs and single-stage, dual-stage or progressive operation; its published nozzle choices and mixture guidance are vendor specifications, not validated sizing rules for an unrelated DIY build. DIY parts approach, installation kit or professional installation?
| Approach | What the sources establish | What to verify for the vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Home-selected parts | No universal combination or validated DIY specification is established in the sources. | Controller compatibility, fluid and material compatibility, metering and safeguards, installation instructions, and vehicle-specific tuning. |
| Holley 557-101 installation kit | Holley lists a reservoir, low-level float, tubing, filter, fittings, relay, wiring, fuse and warning LED. The kit is for Holley HP or Dominator EFI and is not stand-alone; the pump and solenoid/nozzle assembly are additional required components. Instructions and product page. | Whether the vehicle has the required EFI system, which additional components it needs, fluid compatibility, installation details and tuning support. |
| Professional installation and tuning | Holley directs customers to dealers for custom kits, installation and tuning. The source does not establish service availability, cost or results for a particular location or vehicle. Holley product page. | Ask the shop to confirm compatibility, safeguards, calibration responsibility and applicable local requirements for the exact vehicle and use. |
Use manufacturer documentation to establish what a specific kit includes and supports; do not treat a kit listing or a vendor’s benefit claims as independent proof that a different DIY configuration is safe or effective.

Installation hazards and precautions
Installation involves vehicle-support, electrical, routing and fluid-handling risks. Banks’ universal-system manual, dated July 19, 2016, gives manufacturer guidance for its system: read the instructions, disconnect the battery ground before work, and keep hoses and wiring at least 6 inches from heat, moving parts and sharp edges, recommending 8 inches or more where possible. It also says to use appropriately rated stands, ramps or a commercial hoist rather than relying on a floor jack alone. These directions are not a substitute for current vehicle service information or the instructions for the components actually used. Banks Straight-Shot and Double-Shot owner’s manual.
- Follow the complete current instructions for the vehicle and every installed component; do not infer a wiring or plumbing arrangement from a parts list.
- Use stable, appropriately rated vehicle supports and disconnect power as the applicable instructions direct.
- Route hoses and wiring away from exhaust heat, moving parts and sharp edges, observing the relevant manufacturer’s clearances.
- Keep components clean during installation and verify that the engine’s fuel system can deliver fuel to factory specification, as Banks advises in its manual.
- Confirm fluid compatibility for every wetted component and account for the chosen fluid’s handling hazards.
Methanol handling and material compatibility
Methanol is flammable and volatile. Banks’ 2016 manual advises avoiding direct contact with methanol, whether pure or diluted; its statement that dilution makes its named mixture safer does not mean diluted methanol is harmless. Holley separately warns that its system must not exceed 50% methanol and that hardware must be compatible with the fluid. Follow the applicable product safety information and use fluid-compatible components rather than assuming that ordinary automotive tubing, seals or fittings are suitable. What to establish before choosing or building a system
- The exact vehicle, engine, fuel system and intended operating conditions.
- Whether the engine controller supports the intended control method, and what hardware it requires.
- Fluid choice and documented compatibility of the reservoir, pump, lines, seals, fittings and metering components.
- How the system detects low fluid or delivery faults, and what the engine does if injection is unavailable.
- Who is responsible for vehicle-specific calibration and for verifying the engine’s fuel system.
- Applicable local rules for the vehicle’s use, emissions status and modifications; the cited sources do not establish legality for an unspecified location or vehicle.
Without those details, a specific build plan or nozzle recommendation would be guesswork. The cited material supports product-specific compatibility and installation cautions, not a universal DIY design or performance claim.
