Electrical discharge machining (EDM) can cut some magnetic materials, but not because they are magnetic: the workpiece must be electrically conductive. EDM removes material with repeated electrical discharges rather than a conventional cutting edge, so hardness alone does not rule a material out. That does not make a homemade EDM an easy or validated solution; wire EDM is a specialized, relatively slow process with specific geometry limits.
How EDM removes material
EDM creates repeated electrical discharges across a small gap between an electrode and a workpiece. The sparks melt or vaporize tiny amounts of the workpiece. A dielectric medium separates the electrodes and participates in the discharge process. Because the process does not rely on a sharp cutting edge, it can machine hard materials that are electrically conductive. MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms and the University of Cincinnati describe this discharge-based process; Cincinnati notes that EDM can machine conductive materials regardless of hardness.
Can EDM cut a magnet?
Sometimes. Magnetism is not the test for EDM suitability; electrical conductivity is. Some magnetic materials are conductive and suitable for EDM. Loughborough’s Materials Characterisation Centre includes magnetic materials among examples suited to wire EDM, while Cincinnati identifies conductivity as the material requirement. Those sources support a qualified answer, not a claim that every magnet can be cut. Identify the magnet’s actual material and confirm its suitability with the machine’s manufacturer or a qualified EDM operator before planning a cut.
Choose the EDM process for the shape
Wire EDM and sinker EDM use discharges but make different kinds of geometry. A machine intended for one process should not be assumed to perform the other’s work.

Wire EDM is therefore not a general-purpose way to carve any shape: it cuts through the material. Sinker EDM is the relevant process when the job calls for a cavity rather than a through-cut.
Why “with ease” is misleading
Being able to machine a hard conductive material does not mean the process is quick, simple, or suitable for an improvised machine. Boston University’s Engineering Product Innovation Center describes wire EDM as relatively slow, limited to cuts all the way through, and dependent on specialized training and staff assistance. Its guidance is specific to that facility, but it illustrates why a capable, properly set-up machine and an experienced operator matter.

The available technical sources explain EDM’s operating principle and applications; they do not establish that a homemade EDM build is safe, reliable, or validated. Do not treat the ability of industrial EDM to cut conductive materials as evidence that a DIY device can do so safely or predictably.

- Find out what the magnet is made of and whether the specific workpiece is electrically conductive.
- Define the required geometry: a wire-EDM through-cut or a sinker-EDM cavity.
- Ask a professional EDM shop or staffed machine facility to confirm material compatibility, machine capability, setup, and operator requirements.
For institutional access, Boston University’s wire EDM facility page describes training and staff involvement. For wire EDM, the electrode is a machine-specific consumable; MIT says the wire is usually brass, but that does not mean a generic spool fits every machine.
