Stop sanding as soon as you see the plywood’s core. A small, inconspicuous spot on lumber-core plywood may be camouflaged with colored pencils, but that only blends color and grain; it does not replace missing veneer. For a long sand-through, a prominent surface, or MDF-core plywood, a fitted wood or veneer repair—or replacing the damaged part—is usually the more appropriate path.
First, identify the core and the damage
Before choosing a repair, stop removing material and inspect what is exposed. The cosmetic pencil method described by WOOD Magazine is intended only for lumber-core plywood. The magazine warns that MDF-core plywood can absorb finish and turn dark; for that core, it recommends replacing the part or patching the veneer instead.
- Small, inconspicuous spot on lumber-core plywood: pencil camouflage may be worth trying.
- Damage running along an edge or shelf: consider removing the affected strip and fitting hardwood.
- Damage in the middle of a panel: consider a matched veneer patch.
- Prominent or extensive damage: replacing the damaged workpiece may give a better result than a visible repair. WOOD Magazine does not set a universal size threshold.
Test the proposed treatment on scrap first, especially if the face veneer is dark or contrasts strongly with the exposed plies. No cited source gives a success rate or guarantees an invisible match.
Camouflage a small spot on lumber-core plywood
This is a color-and-grain touch-up, not a restoration of the missing face wood. WOOD Magazine’s method uses shallow knife cuts and colored pencils to make the exposed area resemble the surrounding veneer.

- Use a sharp razor knife to make shallow and slightly deeper slices in the exposed area, imitating the veneer’s grain. The layer beneath the face veneer runs perpendicular to the face grain.
- With yellow, tan, and light-brown colored pencils, add long strokes in the direction of the surrounding grain.
- Use a fine-tip dark-brown pencil to draw ray flecks, overlapping them slightly onto the original veneer to soften the boundary.
- Spray on clear shellac to seal the pencil marks. WOOD Magazine warns that brushing can lift them.
- If needed, apply gel stain for a more uniform color. A second coat, wiped lightly, can add streak-like grain.
These shellac and gel-stain steps are part of the cited pencil-camouflage method, not a universal finishing recipe. Check compatibility with the existing finish before applying products to the actual piece; the cited guidance does not establish compatibility across finishes.
Repair a sand-through that runs along an edge
For a lengthwise sand-through on a plywood shelf or cabinet side, Popular Woodworking describes removing the damaged strip and replacing it with matching hardwood. This is a more substantial repair than pencil camouflage and requires careful routing and flush sanding.

- Use a straightedge to guide a router fitted with a straight cutting bit. Cut a groove 1/8 inch deep, wide enough to remove the sand-through and running the full length of the affected side or shelf.
- Choose a hardwood strip with similar color and grain. Make it slightly thicker than the groove is deep.
- Glue the strip into the groove.
- Sand it carefully until it is flush with the surrounding surface. A squiggly pencil line drawn across the hardwood-to-veneer joint can help you track how much material you remove while sanding.
The visual match depends on the strip’s color and grain and on careful fitting and finishing. The source does not provide a quantified likelihood of a successful match.
Patch damage in the middle of a panel
A center-panel burn-through removes face material where a narrow edge strip may not be a suitable repair. Oakwood Veneer’s repair guide discusses using a matched veneer patch for damage in the middle of a panel and small-spot touch-up for minor edge damage. Match the veneer’s grain and color as closely as possible.

The guide is from a commercial veneer supplier, so treat its claims of an “invisible” repair as promotional rather than a guaranteed outcome. It also cautions against relying on a blob of putty beneath clear finish. If the repaired surface will be highly visible, weigh a veneer patch against replacing the part rather than assuming a touch-up will disappear.

Product-specific finish care is not a veneer repair
Rubio Monocoat’s Spot Repair Set instructions concern local care of its own interior oiled wood surfaces, including scratches, local damage, wear, or changes in color or protection after stain removal. They call for preparation that matches the original treatment and local reapplication of the original Oil Plus 2C color. This is product-specific guidance, not evidence that the product repairs a sand-through or suits other finishes. The booklet warns that oil-saturated cloths and tools can spontaneously combust and instructs users to soak them in water before disposal.
