A French cleat, also called a Z-bar or Z-clip, hangs an object with its support concealed: one matching bracket half is fixed to the wall, the other to the object’s back, and the two interlock. The right hardware and fasteners depend on what you’re hanging, its weight, the wall material and the bracket’s instructions—there is no universal safe load rating for an unspecified setup.
How a hidden cleat bracket works
A French cleat system uses two matching profiles. One mounts to the wall and the other to the back of the object. When the object is lowered into place, the profiles engage and support it while remaining out of sight. Alopsys author Mees van der Plas described the arrangement in an article dated April 23, 2026: “One profile is fixed to the wall, the second to the rear of the object you want to hang.”
This concealed method is used for objects such as frames, mirrors, signs, panels and cabinets. The precise bracket design and instructions vary, so check that the set is intended for the object and installation you have.
What to check before choosing a cleat
- Object and backing: Confirm that the cleat can be attached securely to the object’s rear and that its shape suits the item.
- Bracket construction and length: Choose a product designed for the application; do not assume that all Z-bars or cleats have the same capacity.
- Wall material: Identify the substrate before choosing screws or anchors. Ekena’s installation guidance notes that masonry requires anchors and that requirements can vary by surface.
- Product instructions and rated capacity: Follow the exact hardware maker’s directions. Capacity must apply to the specific hardware and installation, not merely to the cleat style.
Some cleat applications rely on gravity and the object’s weight rather than a separate mechanical lock to the structure. Whether that is appropriate depends on the product and application; do not assume a cleat locks in place.

Install for a level, secure fit
- Check the object and wall: Confirm the cleat set suits the object and identify the wall substrate so you can select the required fasteners or anchors.
- Attach the object-side profile: Position and fasten its matching half to the rear of the object according to the product instructions.
- Position the wall profile: Mark the intended location and use a level to align the wall bracket before fastening it. A mirror-cleat installation guide specifically calls for checking the wall bracket with a level.
- Fasten to the substrate: Use the fasteners and anchors appropriate for the actual wall material and the cleat maker’s instructions.
- Hang and check engagement: Lower the object so the two profiles interlock. Confirm that it is seated as the hardware instructions specify.
Why there is no single safe load rating
A load rating cannot be responsibly assigned to a cleat installation without knowing the exact hardware, object, wall construction and fastening arrangement. Supplier descriptions and installation guides explain the method, but they do not establish a universal capacity or comparable ratings across brands. Use the rated capacity for the specific product and installation conditions; if the instructions do not establish that the intended setup is suitable, do not infer a rating from the bracket’s appearance or type.
