For a cushion aloe, start by checking the botanical label: the name refers to Haworthia retusa, while Haworthia cooperi is a different species. Both are compact succulents, but light guidance can vary by species. In either case, give the plant bright light, use a fast-draining mix, and wait until the medium is approaching dryness before watering again.
Identify your Haworthia
Haworthias form compact rosettes, though their leaf shapes and patterns vary. NC State Extension identifies “cushion aloe” as Haworthia retusa, a small succulent native to South Africa’s Cape Provinces. Its blunt leaves suit the name, but “cushion aloe” does not mean it is a true aloe. NC State Extension’s profile of H. retusa describes its natural habitat as shaded by rocks or other plants.
Your plant may instead be labeled H. cooperi. That is a separate species, not another name for H. retusa. H. cooperi is known for translucent leaf tips; the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) explains that these help the plant photosynthesize when parts are covered by sand in its native habitat. Check the botanical name on the plant label where possible, especially when following species-specific care advice.
How much light does a Haworthia need?
Bright, indirect light is a sensible indoor starting point. The RHS gives this as broad Haworthia guidance. For H. retusa, NC State says morning or late-afternoon sun can be tolerated, but intense midday sun may scorch the leaves.

Succulents' leaves are very fragile and may fall off during shipping. If your plant is missing some leaves upon arrival, just know they will grow back over time
Guidance is not identical for every species: the RHS profile for H. cooperi calls for full light. If you do not know which species you have, avoid a sudden move into strong direct sun. Increase exposure gradually and watch for signs of leaf stress, such as scorch.
When and how should you water a Haworthia?
Water sparingly when the potting medium is approaching dryness, rather than following a fixed weekly schedule. Drying time changes with the container and growing conditions, so check the medium before watering. The RHS advises that Haworthias can rot if overwatered or kept in damp compost; NC State also warns that excess water can cause root rot.

- The collection of 3 different Haworthias you will receive are growing in 2" pots
- Variety in the assortment sent will vary
- They are 3-4 inches tall.
- Haworthias are a genus of small succulent plants confined in the wild almost exclusively to the Republic of South Africa
- Haworthias rarely require a pot larger than 4-inches in diameter making them ideally suited for a bright windowsill
In winter, keep the plant cooler and drier and water only occasionally and lightly. The RHS recommends keeping Haworthias above 10°C (50°F) during winter. It also gives a general growing range of 10–26°C (50–80°F); these are RHS horticultural recommendations, not results from a measured study.
The RHS notes that fluoride in tap water can damage leaves and suggests rainwater or filtered water if possible. This is a precaution, not a guarantee that tap water will harm every Haworthia.

What soil and pot should you use?
Choose a medium that drains readily and does not remain wet. The RHS recommends peat-free cactus compost for Haworthias. For H. retusa, NC State recommends a well-drained succulent or cactus mix, with sand or perlite added to encourage drainage.
A pot with a drainage hole can help excess water escape. The care guidance does not specify a required pot material or exact size, so prioritize drainage over a particular container style.

How do you propagate a Haworthia?
For a clump-forming plant, separating offsets is a straightforward home-growing option. The RHS recommends removing smaller rosettes around the plant’s outer edge and potting them individually. NC State also lists division for H. retusa.
Other methods are species-specific rather than equally simple alternatives: the RHS lists seed propagation for H. cooperi, while NC State lists leaf cuttings for H. retusa.

Is cushion aloe safe to handle?
NC State describes H. retusa as non-toxic, but notes that its sap may irritate skin. That statement applies to the plant identified in that profile; it should not be treated as a safety assessment of every plant sold under a broad Haworthia or cushion aloe label.
