Happy Handles is a do-it-yourself grocery bag carrier designed to gather several handled bags for a trip from the car to an apartment or house. The Make: project uses an 18-inch wood bar with four bag hooks, a top hand grip, a towel-padded side that rests against the body, and an adjustable shoulder strap. It is a build plan—not evidence of a currently sold product—and the instructions do not establish a safe load limit.
What the Happy Handles project is
The Make: project frames its purpose plainly: “It is too difficult to carry groceries from the car to an apartment/house in one trip.” Its design collects bag handles on hooks, leaving a grip and shoulder strap for carrying the bar. The source page was published December 18, 2012, and shows an update date of April 3, 2015. It describes how to build the carrier; it does not report independent tests or a tested weight capacity. Materials and tools
The project lists these materials:
- One treated wood piece, cut to 18 inches
- One standard jump rope, using its handle as the grip
- One hand towel
- Four rubber bands
- One 15-foot tarp strap
- One 6-foot adjustable yoga strap
- Two carabiners
- One six-pack of hooks with screws; four hooks are used along the bottom, with the remaining hooks used at the ends
The listed tools are a drill bit and electric drill, hot-glue gun and glue sticks, level, Phillips-head bit, scissors, screwdriver, skill saw, and tape measure. The project says its materials can be found at general retailers, hardware stores, and craft stores; it does not specify particular product brands.
How the carrier is assembled
- Cut and mark the wood. Cut the treated wood to 18 inches. Mark and predrill holes for the jump-rope handle and four lower hooks.
- Install the bag hooks. Attach four hooks along the lower side of the bar with their screws.
- Fit the tarp strap. Thread the tarp strap through the holes intended for the handle.
- Add the top grip. Hot-glue the jump-rope handle near one end of the bar to form a hand grip.
- Pad the body-facing side. Fold the hand towel against the side that will rest against the body and secure it with the four rubber bands.
- Add the shoulder strap. Attach inverted hooks at the ends of the bar, then connect the adjustable yoga strap using the two carabiners. Adjust the strap length for comfort.
The project calls for proper safety protection when using power tools. Follow the tool manufacturers’ instructions, keep hands clear of the blade and drill bit, and work on a stable surface. The Make: instructions describe the assembly but do not establish a safe working load for the finished carrier.

How the carrying setup works—and what it does not establish
The four lower hooks hold shopping bag handles. The jump-rope handle provides a top hand grip, while a separate adjustable yoga strap connects at the ends for shoulder carrying. The towel is positioned against the body-facing side. These are design details, not evidence that a particular load will be comfortable, stable, or safe. The source gives no tested load limit, independent performance results, or specified compatibility testing across bag types.
Build it or choose a ready-made carrier?
Building Happy Handles makes sense if you have the tools and workspace and want to assemble the specific wood-bar design. A ready-made multi-bag carrier is an alternative if you would rather avoid cutting, drilling, and attaching hardware. The cited vendor pages describe their own products; their claims are not independent test results.

For any carrier, check whether its hooks or grip suit the handles on your bags, and whether the product provides a load rating you can evaluate. Do not treat the DIY project’s dimensions or construction steps as a weight rating.
