A hand-crank marble-climbing machine is a small mechanical elevator: a crank drives carriers that pick up marbles, lift them, and release them onto a gravity-fed track. Practical starting points include a timing-belt loop with grippers, a cardboard cup loop or wheel, and printable lead-screw or gear-and-scoop mechanisms. The plans and listings below describe different approaches, not independently tested or certified machines.
Choose a lift mechanism
Pick a design based on your tools, materials, and how much adjustment you want. Each option needs to solve the same three tasks: capture a marble at the bottom, keep it in place while rising, and release it reliably at the top.

The available descriptions do not establish an apples-to-apples performance comparison, so there is no substantiated universal winner. If you want a more documented modular project, Woodgears describes a paid downloadable plan set with 18 pages of drawings and illustrations, more than 100 construction photos, and a SketchUp model. Plan a belt-loop build
The TechYorker design is a compact starting layout, not a validated engineering standard. It gives an approximate effective climb of 300–330 mm, a 300 mm × 220 mm base, 16–20 mm marbles, and 18 mm plywood or MDF for several frame dimensions. Use those figures as plan-specific starting points and adapt the frame to your actual belt path and track.

Parts and fit
- Timing belt and pulleys: The guide names 6 mm or 10 mm timing belts and gives HTD 3M or 5M as examples. Match the pulley profile and pitch to the chosen belt, and check width and dimensions as a set; a belt and pulley that merely look similar may not fit.
- Axle and supports: The listed options are an 8 mm steel rod or hardwood dowel for the axle, with bearing blocks or bushings where available.
- Crank and frame: Plan for a crank handle and plate, fasteners, and a frame sized to the lift path. The guide assumes 18 mm sheet material for several dimensions.
- Grippers: The guide suggests EPDM or silicone strip, plastic tabs, felt, or anti-slip tape. Test how the chosen material holds the marble without obstructing its release.
- Marbles and channel: The cited plan uses 16–20 mm marbles and recommends sticking to one size. Size the pickup and track channels around the actual marble rather than assuming every marble in that range will fit the same way.
The guide gives categories and some dimensions, not a tested, brand-specific bill of materials. If shopping for the belt drive, search for “HTD 3M timing belt and matching pulleys” only if the selected plan uses that profile; the source does not specify a brand or exact belt length. Choose length and pulley dimensions for your layout. For other mechanisms, buy only the parts their plans require.
Assemble and tune in stages
- Fix the marble size first. Measure the marbles and make a short section of channel and pickup shelf. Check that a marble rolls freely but does not wander out of the path.
- Build the frame and pulley supports. Keep the two pulleys aligned in one plane. Make the upper pulley mount adjustable so you can set belt tension after assembly.
- Run the bare belt before adding grippers. Turn the crank by hand and watch for the belt migrating sideways. Correct pulley alignment and tension before fitting carriers.
- Add grippers and position the pickup shelf. Space and shape the grippers so they capture one marble at the bottom and carry it without rubbing on the frame. Keep the shelf adjustable while testing pickup.
- Set the top release. A release lip or guide should let each marble exit onto the return track without catching on a gripper or falling outside the track.
- Test slowly, then adjust one issue at a time. Run a few marbles by hand, observe where each one enters, rides, and leaves, and change alignment, tension, shelf position, or release geometry as appropriate.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The belt walks off or drifts sideways: Stop and check pulley alignment and belt tension. The belt-drive guide recommends checking migration before installing grippers.
- Marbles miss the carrier at the bottom: Adjust the pickup shelf and confirm its opening suits the selected marble size. A shelf that is too low, too high, or too far from the belt can prevent reliable capture.
- Marbles fall during the climb: Inspect gripper spacing and contact. A carrier must retain the marble through the lift but still allow it to release at the top.
- Marbles jam at the top: Check the release lip and the approach to the return track. Adjust their position so the marble can leave the carrier cleanly.
- The machine binds while cranking: Turn the mechanism without marbles first. Look for belt rubbing, pulley misalignment, or carriers contacting the frame before changing the crank or adding more parts.
What the plans do—and do not—establish
The published dimensions and performance targets above belong to their respective plans and listings; they are not independent test results. The cited descriptions do not establish a certified design or safety evaluation. Treat the machine as a DIY moving mechanism, keep fingers clear of pinch points around belts, gears, and carriers, secure the frame, and supervise children during operation. Verify current file availability and fit before committing materials, especially for model listings whose contents may change.
