Heatilator Fireplace Troubleshooting: Safe Steps for Common Problems

Heatilator fireplace troubleshooting starts with the model number and ignition type. Find safe checks for a pilot, remote, or outage—and when to call a technician.

If your Heatilator fireplace will not start, the pilot will not stay lit, or the remote stopped working, first identify the exact model and ignition system. Heatilator fireplaces use different controls and procedures, so there is no single reset or troubleshooting sequence that applies to every unit. Start with the model-specific instructions; leave gas, wiring, and internal ignition repairs to a qualified technician.

Start with the model and ignition system

Before trying a reset, relighting steps, or replacement batteries, record the fireplace’s full model and serial number. Heatilator says these identifiers help owners find product information, service, and parts. On a gas fireplace, the rating plate is in the control area, accessed behind the decorative front and vanity panel. Access varies by model, so use the manual and avoid forcing panels or components. A flashlight can help read the plate.

Find the matching manual through Heatilator’s product manuals. The manufacturer’s owner-support page also groups help by topics such as pilot lighting, IPI+ reset, remote reset, and power outages. These topic listings are starting points, not universal instructions: follow the procedure for your specific model.

Check whether the fireplace has a standing pilot or an intermittent pilot system (including IntelliFire variants). If you cannot identify the system from the manual or controls, stop and ask an authorized dealer rather than trying a procedure intended for another ignition type.

Match the symptom to a safe next step

What you notice What to check When to call for service
Fireplace will not start Use the model-specific operating instructions and confirm whether power or a remote control is involved. If the instructions do not resolve it, or the problem appears to involve gas, wiring, or internal ignition components.
Pilot is out Confirm that the fireplace has a standing pilot and use its matching relighting instructions. If the pilot will not light or stay lit after following those instructions.
Remote does not operate the fireplace Find the remote-reset instructions for the exact model; do not assume a reset sequence is shared across models. If the model-specific reset does not help or the fault appears to involve the receiver, wiring, or controls.
Problem began during or after a power outage Check whether the model has a battery backup and verify the battery type and instructions in its manual. If the fireplace still does not operate as described in the manual.

If a standing-pilot fireplace has gone out

Heatilator says a standing pilot may occasionally need relighting. Its guidance describes these systems as usually having an on/off knob or switch and an igniter, but confirm the ignition type and procedure in your fireplace’s manual before doing anything. Do not apply standing-pilot steps to an intermittent-pilot model.

The manufacturer’s relighting guidance can involve accessing components and glass, checking the igniter, and holding a control knob. Because access and lighting steps differ by model, use the matching Heatilator operating video or support resource and manual rather than treating those actions as a general procedure. If the pilot does not light, Heatilator says to wait five minutes before retrying. If it still will not light or remain lit, stop and arrange qualified service.

After a power outage: backup batteries depend on the model

Heatilator says intermittent-pilot systems need electricity to spark each time. Many IntelliFire and IntelliFire Plus models have battery backup, but availability and instructions depend on the fireplace. Its general guidance is two D-cell batteries for IntelliFire and four AA batteries for IntelliFire Plus; verify the exact type and installation steps in the model manual before inserting batteries.

Heatilator advises using backup batteries only during an outage and removing them when they are not needed for one, because heat around the appliance can affect battery life. The manufacturer says a standing pilot does not need electricity to activate the pilot flame.

Know when troubleshooting becomes a service call

Do not attempt to measure gas pressure, bypass a safety switch, test module output, adjust electrodes, disassemble a gas valve, or work on fireplace wiring. These are not homeowner checks. Heatilator’s ICON DV-IDV Series manual (4042-575, Rev. S, dated 5/11) states: “This troubleshooting guide can only be used by a qualified service technician.” It directs owners to contact a dealer to arrange qualified service. That manual is model-specific and historical, but its boundary is clear: internal diagnosis belongs with a qualified technician.

Heatilator routes service and parts through authorized dealers; it does not sell or ship service parts directly to consumers. Use the dealer locator for model-specific service, approved replacement parts, or warranty questions. If you smell gas, do not continue troubleshooting or operate electrical switches; leave the area and contact your gas supplier or emergency services from a safe location.

Schedule annual gas-fireplace maintenance

Heatilator recommends annual maintenance for gas fireplaces and provides a checklist or dealer service. Scheduling before the heating season can make it easier to address maintenance before regular use, but this is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not a statement of a universal legal requirement. See Heatilator’s maintenance guidance or arrange service through an authorized dealer.
