You can make a simple, light-duty garbage grabber from jumbo craft sticks and split pins or brads, arranged as a scissor linkage. It is best treated as a small craft or classroom build for harmless, lightweight objects—not as a tested outdoor litter picker. “Green” can describe its color; paint is optional, not a functional requirement.
Make a craft-stick scissor grabber
The documented project from STEAM Powered Family uses linked craft sticks to open and close a simple set of jaws. Its materials list calls for:
- 12 jumbo craft sticks
- 12–14 split pins or brads
- A ruler and pencil
- A box cutter and scissors
- A drill
- Side-cutters
- Sandpaper
- Optional paint or markers
Build the linkage
- Mark the pivot-hole positions on the sticks using a ruler and pencil, following the project’s layout.
- Drill the marked holes. Work on a stable surface and keep hands clear of the drill path.
- Use the cutter or scissors as needed to shape the stick ends, then smooth rough edges with sandpaper.
- Join the crossed stick sections with split pins or brads. Fasten them loosely enough for the sections to pivot rather than bind.
- Move the linkage by hand to check that the jaws open and close. Add paint or markers only if you want a green finish or other decoration.
The source presents this as a tool for light objects. It does not establish a safe load rating, puncture resistance, or reliability for outdoor litter collection. Try it first on harmless, lightweight items within easy reach.
A different option: dowel-and-string grabber
A separate WGBH educational activity indexed by Howtosmile lists a wooden dowel at least 3 feet long, a 1-inch-diameter PVC pipe, string, rubber bands, a cardboard-tube wire clothes hanger, and duct tape. The activity describes learners making pinchers for small items and experimenting with designs such as tongs, but its indexed listing does not provide complete assembly directions. Treat it as an alternative mechanism to explore, not as a set of verified step-by-step instructions. Do not combine its materials with the craft-stick plan as though they formed one tested design.

When a homemade grabber is not appropriate
A craft-built tool should not be your answer to hazardous or heavy debris. The DIY projects do not show that their mechanisms can safely grip sharp, contaminated, bulky, or heavy objects. Leave needles, unknown containers, chemical waste, bulky items, and anything you cannot handle safely to trained or local services. Follow your local authority’s advice for reporting and handling dangerous litter.
Use a litter picker safely outdoors
Local guidance emphasizes using a picker and gloves, avoiding hazardous items and unsafe locations, and not taking on work that could cause strain. See the advice from North East Lincolnshire Council, Keep Britain Tidy, and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council. Their procedures are location-specific, so check the guidance for where you plan to pick.

- Wear strong gloves and use a litter picker rather than making direct contact with litter. Basingstoke and Deane specifically advises against directly handling broken glass or nails.
- Do not try to pick up items that may be unsafe or contain noxious substances.
- Leave litter that you cannot reach safely with a picker; avoid straining or lifting beyond your ability.
- Stay away from unsafe access points, including high-speed roads and water edges, and do not enter a location without safe access.
DIY or ready-made litter picker?
Commercial litter pickers use a long pole with a grabber mechanism. Unger’s litter-removal range describes variations in grip, rubberized handles, shaft material and length, and magnetized heads for small metal items. Garbo Grabber describes a 43-inch picker with a stainless-steel tip and replacement parts; its page showed the product out of stock when crawled, and availability can change.
If you need a tool for regular outdoor use, compare the reach and length, shaft stiffness and weight, jaw grip for the type of litter, repairability, and safe handling. Those are practical comparison points, not evidence that any particular model or homemade design has been performance-tested here.
