A LEGO Ideas community design by tolsky describes this approach for a 2V dome; it is a fan design, not an official LEGO instruction set or a tested engineering guide.
Choose a construction approach
Two LEGO Ideas community projects describe different ways to make a dome. The first uses hinged triangular panels and repeatable clip-and-bar connections. A second proposal uses rods and steering-wheel connectors. Neither project provides independently tested strength or stability results.
| Approach | Connection method | What the project specifies |
|---|---|---|
| tolsky’s 2V dome, published March 19, 2021 | Flat triangular assemblies made with hinges; clips and bars line the struts so mirrored members can connect. | Two strut lengths, shown in blue and white. No numeric dimensions or complete parts inventory are stated. LEGO Ideas project |
| CaptainVerbalCelery101’s proposal, published May 22, 2024 | Rods joined with steering-wheel connectors. | The author describes 65 rods and 26 steering-wheel connectors, with rods three or four rounds long. The description calls the build challenging. These are project-specific details, not general requirements. LEGO Ideas project |
The hinged-panel method gives you a clear repeatable assembly pattern. The rod-and-connector proposal describes its components more explicitly, but its author characterizes it as challenging. Pick one approach rather than mixing parts or assumptions from both.
Plan the dome before building
Decide how large you want the finished model to be and sketch the triangular panel pattern. The 2V design uses two different strut lengths, but its project description does not give measurements or a universal length ratio. Treat any dimensions you choose as your own design decisions.

- Rich particles: This dome mosque building block set contains up to 983 particles, providing children with ample creative materials. The rich variety of parts allows children to fully unleash their imagination, explore various possibilities during the construction process, and enjoy the fun of free creation
- Excellent quality: Made with high-quality materials, each particle has excellent connectivity and stability. After the child completes the assembly, the finished product is extremely sturdy and not easily scattered. Even during daily movement and display, it can maintain its integrity and demonstrate excellent quality
- Learning architectural thinking logic: This building block set is based on the dome mosque, and children need to think about building structure, spatial layout, and other issues during the assembly process. Through continuous experimentation and practice, they can gradually cultivate architectural thinking logic, enhance spatial cognitive ability, and problem-solving skills
- Full of sense of achievement: When children work hard and gradually assemble scattered building blocks into a beautiful dome mosque model, they will gain a huge sense of achievement. This sense of achievement not only enhances children's confidence, but also stimulates their interest in architecture and handicrafts, prompting them to bravely challenge more complex tasks
- Ideal Gift: Whether as a birthday gift, holiday gift, or daily reward, this dome mosque block set is an excellent choice. It can not only allow children to learn and grow while playing, but also become a unique and exquisite decoration in their rooms, adding fun and color to their lives
- Choose a consistent scale for the model and keep corresponding panels alike.
- Mark which struts use each of the two lengths; using different colors can make them easier to distinguish.
- Gather LEGO-compatible hinges, clips, and bars for the panel method. The project does not provide a complete inventory or confirm a specific kit.
Build with hinged triangular panels
- Make matching flat triangles. Assemble each triangular panel with hinges, keeping the construction consistent from panel to panel. Tolsky describes the triangles as flat assemblies made using hinges.
- Line the struts with connectors. Place clips and bars in the same positions on corresponding struts. Repeatability matters: the mirrored members need compatible connector placement to meet as intended.
- Connect the mirrored struts. Join the lined-up members into the repeating dome pattern. The design places connections along the struts rather than requiring every member to converge at a single multi-strut vertex.
- Assemble progressively. Bring panels together in stages and check each connection before adding more. If a joint does not line up, compare its clip-and-bar placement with the matching strut and correct the inconsistency before closing the structure.
- Close the dome and review the pattern. Confirm that the panels meet consistently and that the two strut lengths remain in their planned positions. This check is practical guidance for following the described repeating method, not an official LEGO inspection procedure.
Why the connections are arranged along the struts
Tolsky’s project description says traditional geodesic designs can put five or six struts together at a joint, a difficult fit to reproduce with LEGO geometry. The author notes that LEGO has hexagonal shapes but, in the design context described, no brick supporting a pentagon. The workaround is to connect members along the struts—effectively doubling up each strut—instead of trying to make every member meet at one vertex.
The design is described as 2V, with two different strut lengths. Its blue-and-white color distinction helps identify those lengths, but the project does not state numeric measurements. Do not infer dimensions from the color scheme alone.

- 314 PIECES — THE MOST AMBITIOUS BUILDS IN THE NEON LINE — With nearly triple the pieces of the Primer Neon, the Neon Engineer unlocks a completely different scale of building: large geodesic domes, multi-axle rolling machines, fractal tessellations, and complex 3D structures that smaller sets simply can't achieve. Includes 30 squares and 40 trigons each in neon green, neon orange, neon pink, and yellow — plus 20 wheels, 19 axles, and 5 rubber bands. This is the set for builders who've outgrown starter sets.
- 4 UV-REACTIVE NEON COLORS — THE MOST SPECTACULAR GLOW IN THE LINE — Neon green, neon orange, neon pink, and yellow all react brilliantly under black light — the widest neon palette in the Lux Blox catalog. Build something complex and colorful, then hold a UV light to it and watch it transform into a glowing work of engineering art. The four-color combination creates stunning color contrast in both natural light and UV — builds that look genuinely impressive displayed on a shelf or desk.
- EXPLORE FRACTALS, ATOMIC STRUCTURES, AND ADVANCED ENGINEERING CONCEPTS — The Neon Engineer goes beyond simple builds. The patented snap-and-lock hinge (240° range of motion) enables the kind of curved, recursive, and organic structures that model real-world science: fractal patterns, molecular lattices, architectural domes, and mechanical systems. For children passionate about math, science, or engineering, this is the building set that takes those interests seriously.
- CERTIFIED STEAM EXPERIENCE — 2022 NEWSWEEK BEST IN STEAM AWARD WINNER — Officially certified by STEAM.org. As advanced builders work through complex structures, they develop deep spatial reasoning, geometric intuition, structural engineering thinking, and mathematical pattern recognition — without a curriculum in sight. Free play makes free thinkers. Compatible and expandable with all other Lux Blox sets. Ages 6 and up — though the most rewarding for ages 8–14.
- 100% MADE IN THE USA — SAFE ABS PLASTIC, SMALL-BUSINESS BUILT — Designed and manufactured in America using the same durable ABS plastic as LEGO bricks. Non-toxic, child-safety tested, and built to survive years of intensive building. From Mike and Heather Acerra's small-business team in Illinois — real customer support on every order. Available in classroom 6-pack and 12-pack for educators and makerspaces.
Display the finished model
Tolsky mentions a LEGO Art base as a sturdy tabletop support and says wall display is another option. The base is an example, not a required or included part; the project does not name a specific base model. Choose a support that suits your model and display space.

LEGO’s official US page for Creative Transparent Bricks set 11013 identifies it as a 500-piece set from 2021 and provides downloadable instructions. It is a general creative-bricks set; the page does not say that it contains the parts needed for either dome or include a dome build.
