Good Soil vs. Bad Soil: How to Tell the Difference

Good soil is soil suited to its plants and site. Check structure and water movement, then use a soil test to investigate pH and nutrients.

Good soil is soil that supports the plants you want to grow at your site—not one particular color or texture. To assess it, look at how well roots can grow and how water moves through it, then use a soil test to check pH and nutrients. No single visual clue can establish overall soil health.

What makes soil good or bad?

Soil quality describes how well soil performs its intended functions. Soil health is broader: it is assessed through physical, chemical, and biological indicators. That means soil should be judged in context—by the plants it needs to support and the conditions at the site.

For a garden, useful signs include workable structure, adequate room for roots, suitable water movement, and chemical conditions that match the plants. Organic matter contributes to nutrient retention, fertility, structure, and stability, but its presence or appearance alone does not prove that soil is healthy.

How to assess soil in the garden

Check structure and compaction

Texture and structure are different. Texture is the mix of soil particles; structure is how those particles form aggregates. Look for soil that is crusted, dense, or difficult for roots to penetrate, which may indicate compaction or poor structure. Aggregation, bulk density, compaction, and crusting are among the physical indicators used in soil-health assessment.

Clay soil is not automatically bad: it can hold water and nutrients. Likewise, sandy soil is not automatically good or bad. Texture is an underlying property; ordinary garden amendments can improve structure but do not change the soil’s basic texture. NRCS explains soil-health indicators, while Penn State Extension distinguishes soil quality from a single soil trait.

Watch what water does

Notice whether water enters the soil, drains through the root zone, or pools and remains for an extended period. Persistent poor drainage can reduce oxygen in the soil and harm roots. Structure and aggregation affect both drainage and the soil’s capacity to retain water and air.

Soil Test Kit 140 Tests (2026 Updated Instructions) – pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium & Ammonia – Garden, Lawn & Plant Soil Tester Kit for Accurate Fertility Analysis
  • Comprehensive Soil Analysis: Liquid soil test kits offer a comprehensive analysis of essential soil parameters, including pH, ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Having all these measurements in one kit provides a holistic understanding of the soil's fertility and health.
  • Customized Fertilizer Recommendations: With data on pH and nutrient levels, liquid soil test kits help users apply the right type and amount of fertilizers, optimizing plant growth, and preventing over-fertilization, which could harm both plants and the environment. Whether its for lawns, garden, grass, plants, vegetables, turf, flowers, compost trees vines ornamental landscape house plants or hydroponics you will be able to get the results you want.
  • Time and Cost-Effective: Liquid soil test kits are relatively quick and easy to use, saving time for gardeners and agricultural professionals. Compared to sending samples to a laboratory, these kits provide rapid results, allowing for prompt action. Additionally, they are cost-effective for routine testing, making it feasible to monitor soil health regularly.
  • Optimal Plant Health and Yield: By knowing the soil's pH and nutrient levels, gardeners and farmers can fine-tune their agricultural practices to create an environment conducive to optimal plant growth. Adequate levels of ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are essential for healthy plant development and higher crop yields.
  • Accurate and Precise Results: Liquid test kits are designed to provide accurate and precise measurements when used correctly. They are calibrated to detect specific nutrient levels, ensuring reliable data for informed decision-making in plant nutrition and soil management. You get a total of about 140 test. which is 40 test for each parameter and about 20 or so for nitrogen

If a site stays wet, consider the site and water source before changing the soil. Iowa State Extension notes that adding organic matter such as compost can improve aggregation in some poorly drained soils; that is a conditional approach, not a universal fix for every wet location. See Iowa State Extension’s guidance on improving soil drainage.

Consider organic matter and plant performance

Organic matter helps soil retain water and supports structure that allows roots to move more easily. Plant performance can also be a useful clue: persistent poor growth may justify further investigation. But neither dark color nor a count of visible earthworms can diagnose all physical, chemical, and biological conditions. Illinois Extension explains how organic matter affects soil.

Match chemistry to the plants

Soil pH and nutrient availability matter, but there is no single ideal pH or nutrient level for every garden. Compare test results with the needs of the plants you intend to grow and local interpretation guidance. A visual inspection cannot reliably establish these chemical conditions.

When and how to test soil

Observation is a useful first screen for standing water, crusting, compaction, erosion, restricted roots, or recurring plant problems. If pH, nutrients, or organic matter may be involved, use a soil test. A test can answer chemical questions that visual inspection cannot; broader soil-health laboratory testing can assess physical, chemical, and biological traits using accepted methods.

  1. Choose a laboratory or test appropriate to your question. For a fuller assessment, look for a soil laboratory or local extension guidance rather than assuming a basic retail kit evaluates overall soil health. NRCS describes soil-health assessment and laboratory testing.
  2. Collect the sample as instructed. Follow the selected laboratory’s sampling directions so the results represent the area you want to assess.
  3. Interpret results for your plants and location. Use the laboratory’s recommendations or local extension guidance; do not apply a universal target to every garden.
  4. Address the diagnosed issue. Use results and site conditions to guide changes instead of adding amendments by guesswork.

A basic home kit may provide a preliminary check of selected chemical properties, such as pH or nutrients. It does not, by itself, diagnose structure, compaction, drainage, and biological condition together. University of Minnesota Extension provides guidance on soil testing for lawns and gardens.

How to interpret common soil clues

Clue What it may suggest What to do next
Dense, crusted, or hard-to-penetrate soil Possible compaction or weak structure Assess root restriction and site conditions; do not infer the soil’s full health from this sign alone.
Water that pools or leaves soil persistently saturated Possible drainage limitation and reduced oxygen around roots Investigate the site and water source; consider a response suited to the cause.
Sandy or clayey feel Soil texture, which influences water and nutrient holding Do not treat texture alone as a verdict; consider structure, organic matter, drainage, and plant needs.
Dark color or visible earthworms Limited clues about some soil conditions Do not use either as a complete soil-health diagnosis.
Persistent poor plant growth A reason to investigate possible soil or site issues Check growing conditions and consider a soil test for pH and nutrients.

Improve a problem only after identifying it

Soil improvements should follow the diagnosed issue. Organic matter such as finished compost can help build aggregation in some soils, including certain poorly drained soils, but it will not change texture and may not address the cause of persistent wetness. Consider the site, water source, and test results before choosing an amendment or other intervention.
