A bidet can reduce how much toilet paper you use, but it does not necessarily replace paper entirely—and the available evidence does not show that bidets are always cleaner, cheaper or better for the environment. The practical case depends on the fixture, installation, household habits and local plumbing guidance. If you keep using toilet paper, recycled-content products are another way to reduce some environmental impacts.
Can a bidet replace toilet paper?
Usually, it can reduce tissue use rather than guarantee a paper-free bathroom. Many people use water to clean and keep a small amount of toilet paper to dry. How much paper that saves depends on personal habits, the bidet’s spray and controls, and whether the user chooses to air-dry or pat dry.
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) identifies bidet use as one way to reduce tissue consumption. Its report, The Issue with Tissue 2.0 (2020), says bidets require less water per use than the tissue-making process discussed in the report. That is a comparison within the report, not a full life-cycle assessment of every bidet and toilet-paper product.
Does switching save money or help the environment?
Neither outcome is assured for every household. A bidet has an upfront purchase and installation cost, and some models need electricity or a warm-water connection. Paper use may fall, but the amount depends on whether you still use tissue for drying. The available evidence does not establish a universal payback period or quantified household savings.

The environmental comparison also has boundaries. NRDC’s discussion focuses on water used in tissue production and bidet use; it does not compare every model’s manufacture, electricity, maintenance, lifespan or the effects of local water conditions. Consider the full setup and your own use rather than treating “eco-friendly” as a blanket guarantee.
What to consider before choosing a bidet
- Fixture fit and installation: Check compatibility with your toilet and plumbing, and whether installation requires changes beyond a connection to the water supply.
- Power and warm water: Determine whether the model needs an electrical outlet or a warm-water connection. These requirements vary by product.
- Controls: Pressure and temperature settings affect comfort and how you use the spray.
- Cleaning: Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and nozzle-maintenance instructions. Shared installations call for more attention to hygiene than a fixture used by one household.
- Drying routine: Decide whether you will use a little paper, air-dry, or use another method; this affects how much tissue you continue to buy.
A non-electric attachment is one way to explore washing with water, but fit, installation, cleaning and paper use still vary. The evidence reviewed here does not establish current comparative prices or cost savings for named products, so compare product specifications and installation needs directly rather than assuming a particular model will pay for itself.

What does the health evidence say?
A three-year follow-up web survey in Japan, published by K. Asakura and colleagues in 2018, analyzed 7,759 of the 10,305 participants in its baseline survey. It found no significant increase in new haemorrhoids or urogenital infections associated with habitual electric-bidet use during the studied period. Among men, habitual users more often reported new subjective symptoms of irritated skin around the anus: the adjusted risk ratio was 1.36 (95% confidence interval 1.06–1.75). This was a self-reported observational association, not proof that bidet use caused the irritation. The authors called for further study; the survey does not establish that bidets treat medical conditions.
A separate 2017 study by Kanayama Katsuse and colleagues sampled all 292 electric-bidet toilets at one university-affiliated hospital in Japan. The researchers found at least one tested bacterial group on 254 warm-water nozzles (86.9%) and recommended monitoring and disinfection for shared hospital devices. That result describes one hospital setting; it is not an estimate of household contamination or household infection risk.

If you keep using toilet paper
NRDC recommends choosing tissue with the highest available postconsumer recycled content. In The Issue with Tissue 2.0 (2020), it says recycled-content tissue has a much smaller environmental footprint than virgin-fiber tissue in its analysis. The report also recommends looking for FSC certification when recycled products are unavailable and checking that bamboo products are FSC certified. These are the report’s recommendations, not a guarantee that every product carrying a label has the same impact.

Follow your water utility’s or local public-health authority’s instructions, especially if you have a septic system or older plumbing. Disposal rules depend on local infrastructure; advice from one region should not be treated as universal.

For example, Taiwan’s Ministry of Environment announced a “Flush Toilet Paper” policy in March 2026, updated June 2, 2026. It said suitable dispersible toilet paper can pass through under normal flushing conditions when used in appropriate amounts, while warning against flushing non-dispersible items including wet wipes, facial tissues, paper towels, menstrual products, diapers, hair and plastics. The ministry advises Taiwanese consumers to look for packaging labels or icons indicating that toilet paper disperses easily in water. That guidance applies to Taiwan; use the rules for your own location.
