Use edge clamps to close the joints, cauls to keep neighboring faces flush, and gradual, balanced pressure while checking alignment. After the adhesive has cured, check the panel with a straightedge and choose a flattening approach suited to the panel and your available tools.
Prepare the boards and dry-run the glue-up
Clamps should close sound joints, not pull poorly fitted edges into shape. Arrange the boards in their intended order, mark that order, and check that each mating edge meets along its length. Set out the clamps, cauls, and any release covering before opening the glue.
- Arrange and mark the boards so you can restore the intended sequence quickly.
- Position the full set of clamps and cauls. Make sure each clamp can reach its position and be tightened without awkward handling.
- Dry-clamp the assembly. Look for gaps at the joints, faces that sit noticeably out of alignment, and any part of the setup that is difficult to reach.
- Correct fit or setup problems before applying glue. If the panel is large or the adhesive’s working time makes one assembly difficult, consider gluing smaller subassemblies; this is an option, not a requirement, and each stage adds another alignment step.
Fundamentals of Woodworking recommends dry-clamping to check that joints close and the assembly lies flat. Canadian Woodworking also emphasizes laying out clamps and cauls as part of preparation. Choose clamps and alignment aids for the panel
Pipe clamps and parallel-jaw clamps are both used for edge-gluing. Choose based on the panel dimensions, the reach of the clamps you have, and how you can support the assembly. The sources do not establish a universal clamp spacing: board width, panel size, clamp type, and support all affect the layout.

Whether you're a farmer, pet owner, or builder, these galvanized steel clamps provide a reliable way to reinforce your fencing setup.
Edge clamps pull the joints together. Cauls span the panel and help keep adjoining board faces flush as that pressure is applied. They should be stiff enough for their span; protect their contact faces with packing tape or another release surface so squeeze-out does not glue them to the panel.
Fine Woodworking gives hardwood cauls about 1 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and up to 30 inches long as an example for tabletops—not a general sizing rule. That source notes that cauls become less effective on panels wider than about 30 inches, where biscuits, splines, or dowels can help with alignment. These aids register faces; they do not replace accurately prepared mating edges. Advice on whether cauls need a slight camber varies, so treat camber as a possible design choice rather than a requirement for every glue-up. The special surface treatment allows the glue spilled during the panel splicing process to be easily removed by hand or knife, and is not easy to damage the surface of the panel fixture.
- Versatile Adjustable: Our panel clamps are designed to accommodate panels up to 24'' wide and thicknesses ranging from 1/4" to 3", making it perfect for panel clamp woodworking projects of various sizes and dimensions.
- Ideal Projects: Perfect for medium panel clamp woodworking projects such as cutting boards, table tops, wide door panels, cabinet tops, and thick bench tops. This tool is designed to meet your various needs.
How many clamps should I use?
Use enough clamps, positioned along the panel, to close the joints evenly without leaving sections unsupported by pressure. The available guidance does not give a spacing or clamp count that works for every panel. Base the layout on the panel’s dimensions, the boards’ widths, clamp reach, and how the assembly is supported. During the dry run, confirm that each joint closes along its length before committing to glue.
How do I keep the panel flat as I’m clamping?
Balance clamps above and below the panel rather than putting all the pressure on one face; this can reduce the tendency to cup. Add pressure gradually and check both face alignment and flatness as you go. Cauls help keep neighboring boards flush, while a straightedge can reveal whether the assembly is beginning to bow or twist. Woodcraft recommends checking with a straightedge and balancing pressure; the WoodWorkers Guild of America guide also describes alternating clamp placement above and below the panel. How tight should the clamps be?
Tighten only until the joints close and the faces are reasonably aligned. Once a joint is closed, the WoodWorkers Guild of America advises that more force is unnecessary. Excessive or uneven pressure can distort the setup rather than improve it. Check for closed glue lines, aligned faces, and reasonably even squeeze-out instead of aiming for maximum clamp force. WoodWorkers Guild of America: Gluing Up Panels.
How much glue should I use, and how do I handle squeeze-out?
Apply a consistent coating to the mating surfaces, following the instructions for the adhesive you have chosen. There is no single open time or clamp time that applies to all glues: consult the current product label or technical data sheet, and plan the assembly sequence around that product’s working time and the conditions of use.

- WOOD-TO-PIPE CONNECTION: These horse panel clamps attach wood boards measuring 0.78–2 inches thick to round pipe with a 1-5/8-inch outside diameter. Ideal for adding boards to horse stalls, livestock corrals and round pens. Measure your pipe outside diameter and actual board thickness before ordering.
- HELP KEEP BEDDING INSIDE: Add boards along the lower section of stall panels to help reduce shavings, bedding, dirt and sand escaping through open rails. These brackets hold the boards used to create a lower bedding barrier.
- HEAVY-DUTY GALVANIZED STEEL: Steel construction provides a sturdy attachment for wood-to-pipe fencing projects. The galvanized finish helps resist rust and corrosion in outdoor farm and ranch environments.
- BOLT-ON INSTALLATION, NO WELDING: Fasten the clamps using the included carriage bolts and nuts. Tighten with a suitable wrench to attach boards to compatible round pipe without welding equipment. Check that each connection is secure before use.
- 10 CLAMPS WITH MATCHING HARDWARE: Includes 10 panel clamps, each supplied with a carriage bolt and 3/4 inch nut. Use the set for wood-board additions to stalls, corrals, round pens and compatible DIY fencing projects. Plan the quantity needed for your board layout before ordering.
Squeeze-out is a useful visual check, but it is not a substitute for confirming that the joint is closed. Keep it from bonding cauls to the panel by using tape or another release surface on the caul faces. Canadian Woodworking’s gluing guidance cautions against wiping wet glue across the wood surface, which can spread it and cause finishing problems. Canadian Woodworking: Gluing techniques.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check and true the panel after the glue cures
Once the adhesive has cured according to its instructions, inspect the panel with a straightedge to identify high or low areas and check how flat it is. The appropriate way to correct unevenness depends on the panel’s size and thickness and the tools available. The referenced guidance supports checking flatness but does not establish a detailed, generally applicable surfacing procedure; choose a method suited to your particular panel rather than assuming one process fits every assembly.
