Its surface contains luminophore-bearing aggregate that absorbs daylight and releases the stored energy at night. The project demonstrates a different way to make a path visible; published project information does not establish that it reduces crashes.
Where is the glowing bike path?
The test section is on a cycling route toward Wielochowo Lake, beside provincial road 511 near Lidzbark Warmiński. STRABAG reported that the 2016 section was 100 metres long and 2 metres wide, and took four days to build at a net cost of PLN 120,000. Those are project figures reported by the contractor, not a current estimate for constructing a similar path (STRABAG, 2016).
The regional road authority described it as a test section intended to explore lighting dark or hazardous locations. Its planned evaluation included durability, resistance to weather, cyclists’ reactions and safety (Zarząd Dróg Wojewódzkich w Olsztynie).
How does the surface glow without electricity?
The path combines light granite with luminescent aggregate containing luminophores. The material absorbs natural light and emits some of that stored energy after dark. It does not need an external electrical supply to produce the glow, according to STRABAG and the road authority.

This is not solar lighting in the photovoltaic sense: the project description does not mention solar panels powering lamps. The light comes from the material itself. TPA, whose laboratory in Pruszków developed the technology used for the section, selected blue-glowing luminophores to suit the regional landscape, according to STRABAG.
How long does it glow?
The road authority says the path may glow for up to 10 hours; STRABAG’s announcement says it can glow for over 10 hours. Neither source provides an independent measurement method, so these are attributed project claims rather than a verified operating guarantee. STRABAG-sourced reporting says glow intensity and duration can vary with the quantity and quality of luminophores, exposure to light, ambient temperature and where the material is installed (Inżynieria, 2022).

Does the path improve cyclist safety?
Making a dark route more visible is the stated safety rationale, but that is not the same as evidence of fewer crashes. The authority said the trial should be observed and analyzed for safety as well as durability and cyclist response. Its project page does not publish a quantified safety result, and the cited sources do not report crash data or a controlled evaluation.
For cyclists, the practical distinction is between a visible surface and active lighting on a bicycle. The path’s glow does not establish that a rider will be sufficiently visible to other road users in every condition; the tourism guide also notes that the glow is weaker in winter. Follow local rules and use appropriate bicycle lights for night riding rather than treating the path as a substitute.

What is known about the path’s condition now?
STRABAG-sourced industry reporting says the surface was refreshed in 2022. A 2025 secondary report says TPA described the path as operational after renovation prompted by defects in the underlying asphalt layers, including vegetation growth. That account attributes the information to an email from TPA; it is not a direct interview reviewed here (WNP, 2025). A dated road-authority update confirming maintenance condition in 2026 is not available in the cited sources.
Can visitors ride the route?
Mazury Travel describes an 11.3-kilometre loop through Lidzbark Warmiński, Koniewo and Wielochowo, with the luminous section near Wielochowo. Its guide says the glow is weaker in winter (Mazury Travel). This is route guidance, not a live access or traffic update, so check local conditions before setting out.

How does this compare with the Dutch Van Gogh path?
The Polish path uses luminophore-containing aggregate that stores daylight and glows, without additional power. GGS Projekt describes the Dutch Van Gogh-inspired path as using solar panels and LEDs, with additional lighting support. That is a difference in approach, not a head-to-head comparison of brightness, reliability or cost (GGS Projekt).
For construction applications, STRABAG-sourced reporting describes luminescent surfaces as thin overlays or coatings that can be placed on existing paths, sidewalks, roads, squares and parking areas. The cited reporting does not provide a product-level lifecycle cost comparison, so the Lidzbark project’s one-time construction cost should not be treated as a general price for this type of installation.
