What is the Firefly Petunia?
Light Bio developed the Firefly Petunia as a bioluminescent ornamental plant. The USDA’s petition review describes it as an auto-luminescent petunia made using genes derived from naturally bioluminescent mushrooms. The plant produces the glow itself; it is not a conventional petunia treated with paint or an external lighting effect. USDA’s review materials provide the regulatory context for the plant.
Light Bio’s CEO, Keith Wood, described the aim in a 2024 TIME report: “We wanted to show that science can be more than just practical. We wanted to show that science can be joyful.”
How visible is the glow?
Set expectations for a soft bioluminescent display, not a bright garden lamp. Light Bio says the glow varies with plant condition and environment, and that buds can glow more intensely than mature flowers; the light softens as flowers mature. It does not promise a fixed brightness or duration. For the best chance of seeing it, view the plant in darkness and choose a spot with little nearby light pollution. - Fertilizer: Fertilize routinely, following the label on a suitable flowering-plant fertilizer. Light Bio’s starter set includes a specialized nutrition sample, but the available guidance does not establish that a particular outside brand or special formula increases the glow.
- Flowers: Remove older flowers as Light Bio advises.
- Viewing spot: If you want to enjoy the glow, place the plant where surrounding light can be reduced.
The right placement depends on the sunlight available, whether you plan to grow it indoors or outdoors, seasonal temperatures, and container needs. Light Bio’s guidance does not establish a universal indoor or outdoor setup that suits every location, so check the product instructions and local growing conditions.

Light Bio lists the Firefly Petunia as a live starter plant and says it does not sell seeds. The company warns that third-party seed listings are unauthorized. Buy through Light Bio’s official store or confirm directly that a retailer is an authorized partner; do not treat a listing for seeds as genuine just because it uses the Firefly Petunia name.
Availability is seasonal. Light Bio’s homepage announces a Spring 2027 return, which is a future-season notice, not confirmation of current stock or delivery dates. Check the manufacturer’s current site and its authorized-retailer information for inventory and shipping to your location before ordering.
