Build to the race rules first, then design the chassis around the driver, steering and brakes. A gravity racer is not just a wooden body on wheels: it must fit its event’s specifications, turn predictably, stop under load and keep the driver contained. There is no universal plan or set of dimensions, so use the organizer’s current rules and inspection checklist as the design brief.
1. Choose the race and check its rules
Before buying materials or settling on a wheel layout, identify the exact event. Organizers set different limits for dimensions, weight, wheels, materials, propulsion and safety equipment. For example, Gravity Games’ rules specify a maximum length of 2500 mm and width of 1500 mm, require three or four load-bearing wheels, and call for a seated, forward-facing driver, effective steering and brakes. Those are Gravity Games requirements, not general soapbox-car standards.
The variation is clear in other events’ published requirements: the Red Bull Los Angeles 2026 rules set their own dimensions and vehicle-weight limit, while the Gravity Gran Prix 2024 rules require gravity-only propulsion, a seated driver and adequate brakes. Gravity Gran Prix also says its rules do not necessarily apply to All-American Soap Box Derby events. Check the latest rules for your chosen race, since event specifications can change.
Turn the rulebook into a design checklist
- Maximum and minimum dimensions, vehicle weight and permitted wheel count or placement.
- Driver age or eligibility, seating position, restraints and required protective equipment.
- Allowed construction materials and restrictions on sharp edges, loose parts or breakable components.
- Steering and brake requirements, including any hill-hold or stopping test.
- Whether the car must use gravity alone and how it will be inspected.
2. Plan around the driver and chassis
Sketch the car before cutting. Mark the driver’s seated position, wheel locations, steering linkage and brake controls, then check that the proposed dimensions stay within the event limits. The driver should sit forward-facing, be able to reach the controls and remain inside the vehicle’s protected area. A low center of gravity and wide wheel spacing are sensible stability goals, but they do not make a car rollover-proof.

In a March 31, 2024 Stuff build feature, the builders describe starting with side panels and shaping the chassis to suit. They report using a slowly running jigsaw for sheet timber when CNC cutting was unavailable. Treat this as one practical approach rather than a certified plan: the frame and its joints still need to support the driver and withstand steering, braking and the course.
Choose wood or metal for the build you can execute
Wood can be a practical first build when you have basic woodworking tools and skills. The Stuff builders describe sheet timber as accessible and inexpensive; they note that metal construction generally calls for more specialist skills. Whichever material you choose, use sound stock, secure joints and a layout that meets the event’s construction rules. Do not assume a material choice alone makes a chassis safe.

The Stuff project reported spending £250 on its raw materials and body-panel cutting. That is the cost of that particular 2024 build, not a current typical budget. Its builders also mention bicycle wheels and a go-kart steering wheel as money-saving choices, and second-hand bike shops as a possible parts source. Inspect used parts carefully and confirm they fit your chassis and race rules.
Choose wheels for the vehicle, not a rule of thumb
The Stuff feature reports 20-inch wheels as a commonly suggested balance between speed and stability, not as an engineering standard. The right wheel depends on the car’s geometry, driver, course and event requirements. Check wheel condition, axle fit and clearance through the full steering range before committing to a layout.

3. Decide between a kit and a scratch build
A kit can reduce the work of fabricating steering components, but it does not necessarily supply a complete vehicle. A scratch build offers more freedom to match the chassis to your design, but you must source and integrate the steering, wheels and brakes yourself.
| Consideration | Kit route | Scratch build |
|---|---|---|
| Steering fabrication | The DERBY GOKIT manufacturer says its kit includes an automotive-style steering mechanism and related hardware. | You must design or source a steering system and make sure it works with your chassis. |
| What is supplied | The manufacturer lists wheels, instructions, templates, tie rods, steering shaft, crossmember, knuckles, bolts and brackets. | Components depend on your plan and suppliers. |
| What remains to source | The manufacturer says the builder supplies half a sheet of 5/8-inch plywood, nails, screws and glue. Its brake designs also need additional components, such as hinges, cables and tread. | You must source the chassis materials, wheels, steering and brakes, plus suitable fasteners and tools. |
| Fit and event compliance | Check kit dimensions and components against your event and planned chassis before buying. | Check every component and the completed design against the event rules. |
Confirm current kit contents, availability and fit with the manufacturer before purchase. A kit is not a ready-to-race vehicle, and either route still requires a completed car that passes the target event’s inspection.

4. Build steering that turns the intended way
Steering must be securely attached, responsive and predictable. Make sure the driver can reach and operate it from the seated position, and that the linkage cannot foul the wheels, frame or brake controls. Do not rely on appearance or a stationary steering-wheel movement alone; check the wheel response directly.
The All-American Soap Box Derby Gravity Racing Challenge engineering plans show a cable-steering arrangement and specify a direction check: turning the steering wheel right should turn the front axle right. That check applies to the plans’ design, but it illustrates a useful commissioning step for any layout: verify that the controls produce the direction the driver expects before moving the car.

5. Fit and test brakes on the loaded racer
Brakes need to be mounted to sound structure, easy for the seated driver to reach and effective with the completed vehicle and driver aboard. The Stuff builders describe bicycle brakes as easier than homemade pads rubbing directly on the wheels, and note that some pram wheels have disc brakes. Those are examples, not proof that a particular brake will fit or stop your racer. Check mounting strength, cable or control travel, wheel compatibility and stopping performance on the actual loaded car.
Gravity Games requires its brake system to hold the laden racer on a hill and sets a stopping requirement in its own rules. Do not apply that threshold to another event: use the chosen organizer’s current brake test and inspection instructions. If the brake slips, binds or cannot be operated reliably, do not run the car until the fault is corrected.
6. Inspect and test in a controlled area
A gravity racer can cause serious injury. Safety measures lower risk but cannot eliminate it. Follow the kit maker’s safety guidance and your event’s rules, and keep testing away from public roads, traffic, bystanders, animals and parked vehicles.
Before the first run
- Check that steering moves freely, turns the front wheels in the intended direction and does not bind.
- Check that brakes engage and release, and test stopping with the racer carrying its intended load.
- Inspect wheels, axles, steering connections, brake mounts, fasteners and chassis joints for looseness, damage or interference.
- Remove loose objects, cover sharp corners and keep limbs within the vehicle’s protected area.
- Have the driver wear suitable protective equipment, including a helmet, gloves and closed-toe shoes; keep loose clothing away from wheels.
- Supervise children and stop immediately if a control, fastener or component behaves unexpectedly.
Begin any test only in a controlled, clear area where you can stop safely; do not treat an informal test as a substitute for the organizer’s inspection. Recheck brakes and fasteners before each use.
