For lime green plants in your garden, choose by growing conditions first and color second: chartreuse foliage is a look, not a shared set of care needs. These six options range from shade-loving hostas to sun-tolerant coleus and dry-site stonecrop, so match each plant to its spot and check its local hardiness and seasonal status before buying.

Compact foliage for beds and containers

Coleus ‘Wasabi’ or another lime cultivar

Coleus brings vivid foliage to seasonal beds and containers. Clemson Cooperative Extension describes ‘Wasabi’ as chartreuse and suitable for sun or shade; the Missouri Botanical Garden also lists lime-toned coleus options. Because coleus may be treated as a seasonal annual in some climates, check how it is classified where you garden before planning it as a permanent planting. Clemson Cooperative Extension’s coleus guide and the Missouri Botanical Garden’s chartreuse foliage guide provide more detail.

Hosta ‘Chartreuse Wiggles’

This compact hosta offers vivid foliage for part shade to full shade and needs medium water, according to the Missouri Botanical Garden. In southern conditions, North Carolina State Extension recommends full or dappled shade to preserve foliage color and help prevent leaf burn. See the North Carolina State Extension hosta profile before choosing a site.

Heuchera ‘Lime Marmalade’ or ‘Citronelle’

Heucheras form compact mounds suited to borders and containers. The Royal Horticultural Society describes ‘Lime Marmalade’ as bright lime green to chartreuse, with a mature spread of about 45 cm in its cultivar profile; that profile’s hardiness rating is for UK conditions. Most heucheras prefer partial or dappled shade, and pale leaves may scorch in excess sun. Give them moist but well-drained soil rather than a spot that stays soggy. The RHS has guidance on growing heuchera and a profile for Heuchera ‘Lime Marmalade’.

Trailing foliage for the front of a planting

Sweet potato vine ‘Green with Envy’

This trailing vine can spill over a container edge or soften the front of a planting. The Missouri Botanical Garden lists it for full sun to part shade and medium water. Use its placement guidance as a starting point, then check local seasonal treatment and climate suitability in the garden’s chartreuse foliage listings.

Arching grass for a softer texture

Japanese forest grass ‘Aureola’

Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ brings a flowing, arching form rather than a compact mound or trailing habit. The Missouri Botanical Garden lists it as a part-shade perennial with medium water needs. Check local hardiness before planting it as a lasting feature, and consult the Missouri Botanical Garden guide for its listing.

Low groundcover for a sunnier, drier site

Stonecrop ‘Angelina’

Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina’ is the option in this group for a low, spreading groundcover in full sun. The Missouri Botanical Garden lists its water needs as dry to medium, making it a better fit for a sunnier, drier site than the shade-oriented hosta or forest grass. Check local hardiness and seasonal behavior in the Missouri Botanical Garden’s chartreuse foliage guide.

Match the plant to the site before choosing the color

The six plants do not share one ideal exposure or moisture level. Use this comparison to narrow the choices, then verify local hardiness and whether a selection is perennial or seasonal in your climate. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s annual classifications apply to the Midwest and should not be assumed to describe other regions.
